Welcome back to the Great 8 List, all!

Why 8 you ask? Well, in addition to rhyming so well with the word “great” (thus providing a catchy title for my countdown) the number 8 is also my lucky number. (The number 2 is my other lucky number, but two items does not a countdown make).

Also, studies prove that absolutely everybody is a little more ADD today than they were yesterday, and a little less ADD than they will be tomorrow. So a Great 8 List has all the benefits of a Top 10, without those last two things that nobody has time for anyways.

So, last week I seemed to be on a 90’s nostalgia runaway train and apparently I still haven’t quite managed to disembark. However, instead of ignoring it like I should probably do, I’m just going to roll with it. Sound good? Alright, let’s keep on rolling.

I was so psyched to see Chelsea’s post last week on movies you must re-watch from the 90s (awesome list) and it got me thinking about the stack of VHS tapes we had in our den when I was little, and also the the stack of DVDs that sat next to the stack of VHS’s… Because, young grasshoppers, back in the old days you had a VCR that sat elegantly atop your DVD player like so:

Sharp VC-A593 VCR

OR if you were fancy you had a DVD/ VCR combo that looked something like this:

Anyhoozle, as I thought about the movies in those stacks I remembered just how many awesome sports themed movies there were. Not to sound like a 90’s snob, but I think that might have been the heyday for such flicks. I’ll agree that She’s the Man* is a classic, but were there any other ones of note from the aughts? (*so sad/weird about whats going on with Amanda Bynes nowadays.)

So without further ado, I present the 8 Greatest Sports Movies From Your Youth:

8. A League of Their Own

ALeagueOfTheirown

Even though this one didn’t have a kid in the starring role, I still loved it when I was young. And if this was a list about sports movies I love now, this one would be way closer to numero uno. Favorite quote: “There’s no crying in baseball.” Oh! and- “If it was easy everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great”.

7. The Sandlot

With this adorable group of misfits you KNOW you’re in for a good movie. Remember the huge dog??

6. Angels in the Outfield

All I had to do was look at the Google image search of all the baseball players flapping their arms in the dugout a.k.a the sign that angels are with them, and I started getting teary eyed- this is a great move. And look it’s a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

5. The Mighty Ducks

“Goldberg!” Haha remember the crazy goalie? And who doesn’t like to be reminded where Joshua Jackson got his start?

4. Cool Runnings

The story of the Jamaican bobsled team coached by none other than the magnificent and eternally hilarious John Candy. I have so much love for this movie.

3. Ladybugs

I think I’ve already said everything there is to say about this movie. Please and thank you.

2. The Cutting Edge

If you haven’t seen this movie, rent it. It’s soo good. It’s a love story and a sports story and ahh it’s just so good.

Aaand finally 1. Rookie of the Year

Best 90s sports movie. ‘Nuff said.

Did I forget any good ones??

Do you agree/ disagree with the order?

What’s your favorite 90s movie? (doesn’t have to be a sports theme)

29 Thoughts on “The 8 Greatest Sports Movies From Your Youth

  1. This list rocks!! I love sports movies & the 90s kicked ass! I lost count of how many times I watched the Mighty Ducks & Rodney Dangerfield is the best! While not technically a sports movie (and pre-90s), the diving scene from Back to School is classic. RIP Rodney!

  2. These are awesome! I LOVED The Sandlot! I thought the main character was so cute. My fave 80s movies were Adventures in Babysitting, Beaches, or The Great Outdoors. So great!

  3. I love the Sandlot, Cool Runnings, and Mighty Ducks! I’ve watched those with my kids too and they loved them :) I have never seen Ladybugs or the Cutting Edge though… I love the Ninja Turtle movies that came out in the 90s!

    • Lol ninja turtles! totally a sports movie bc kung foo or whatever they did totally counts. and yay im so glad the newest generation appreciates these movies :)

  4. Gah, I loved SO many of these movies! Your list is awesome! “A league of Their Own” would prob be at the top for me though… it’s one of those movies that if I catch it on TV, I have to watch it. Lol! :)

  5. Ahhh! How nostalgic these are! :) Mighty Ducks was a classic for me, along with Angels in the Outfield. Tear jerker, that’s for sure! The 90’s favorites were anything Disney produced. I was sheltered, for the most part! Ha.

  6. This isn’t technically a sports movie, but this post got me thinking about two things 1.) How much I love Charlotte 2.) Other great movies from the 90’s and I remembered Drop Dead Fred!! Does anyone else remember that classic gem? If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you stop everything you’re doing and go watch it right now.

    • LOL i second that suggestion that everyone stop everything you’re doing and go watch it. amazing call, i could devote an entire post to that movie :)

  7. Aw, this brought back good memories! I love so many of those movies! I was just talking to one of my Jamaican patients about Cool Runnings yesterday- awesome movie. And The Cutting Edge made me want to be a professional ice skater for about 2 years of my life until I realized I live in Florida-probably not a good fit.

    • Love cool runnings, I feel like it should have been closer to the top of the list, but then there were other good movies, i couldnt choose! lol i was obsessed with the cutting edge too.

  8. Is it sad that the only movie I’ve seen on this list is Cool Runnings? I feel so uneducated right now. More for me to do over the summer! 😛

  9. The 90’s <3 <3 Seriously the best years ever. I remember my trusty old VCR… and how pissed off I'd get when it would "eat" my tapes. The Sandlot was seriously one of my favorite movies, and the first image that came to my mind when you mentioned it was the scene near the end of the movie when the kid was running away from the dog. Oh good times. And so many good Disney movies came out in those years! Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast. Toy Story. Ohhhh love, love, love.

    • LOL- I forgot about the tape eating- that was the WORST. and you’re so right disney really did have a banner decade in the 90s, i knew every word to aladdin, and ah i want to re-watch toy story 1 soon! the original toy story is still my favorite toy story.

I LOVE this list. Way to keep the nostalgia going strong! 😀

I feel like we need to give a but of love to the whole Mighty Ducks trilogy. Because the first one is awesome but the second one might be the best 90s movie period. Also, ALOTO reminded me of Tom Hanks, which reminded me of Splash. And also Big. So there’s two more gems for you 😉

  11. Angels in the Out Field <3 One of my favs!

  12. I never really liked sports movies as a kid (I was a gender stereotype in the biggest way) but, to this day, I quote the Sandlot regularly. (For-ev-er.)
