So, today is my sister’s 24th birthday!! Yay!

Happy birthday Gioia!!! (pronounced like joy-ah, for those of you who aren’t fluent in vowels)

And not to sound like Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec when she compliments Ann Perkins, but my sister is becoming a magnificent, beautiful, amazing woman and I’m so proud of her.

My sister is the athlete’s athlete. She was a tennis phenom when she was younger. When she was 12, she was about 4 feet 8 inches tall and she was playing against- and beating, mind you- players from the boys varsity tennis team at my high school. Literally.

The two of us had a grand ol’ time together when I first got my license and I would drive her to lessons and then we’d go to TCBY after. We would turn up the radio really loud and sing even louder to chart-toppers of the day like Shania Twain’s ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’. Oh, and also Jimmy Buffet. I remember one day the two of us played ‘The Weather is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful’ on repeat until we learned every. single. word.

Cut to the present, and we live on two opposite sides of the country :( We talk on gchat and email weekly about the important things but getting each other on the phone is hard. When we do finally find a time to talk on the phone that fits into both our schedules AND works with the time difference, they’re marathon sessions. 3 hours easy.

So, this post is dedicated to the best sister anyone could possibly ask for. And in our family it’s sort of a tradition to mark milestones by making up an ode, so Sister, this one is for you…

Birthday Ode

To my dear, darling, younger sister,

I was very glad you weren’t born a mister.

Because I already had a brother,

and I really didn’t want another.

But between the ages of 0 to 5

you were the craziest toddler alive

luckily you outgrew that phase

and now you’re just freaking AMAZE-(ing)

You have the strongest abs,

Of anyone I know,

And you’re my favorite person,

With whom to eat cookie dough.

You live across the country,

So its sometimes hard to chat,

Oh remember that one birthday,

You got that really cranky cat?

So to re-cap my darling sister,

I’m very glad you’re not a mister,

I’m insanely jealous of your core,

And I hope you LOVE being twenty-four!

Happy Birthday Sister!! You are a beautiful tropical fish. Love ya :)

Do  you have siblings?? Are you close with them?

What’s the weirdest animal you’ve ever ridden on? (mine is probably a pony… I’m not as adventurous with things I use for transportation as my sister)

  1. What an awesome bday ode! I’m so glad my girls have each other! My sister & I fought like crazy growing up but now we are so close.

    • Right- you dont always appreciate each other when you’re young, but the older you get the closer you get. i think that’s pretty much the rule to having a sister :)

  2. Hey Charlotte – just came across your blog! That’s a nice tribute to your sister! I also have a younger sister (5 years younger than I), and I find that we’re becoming much closer as we get older!

  3. This is a beautiful post for your sister! I have a twin sister and an older sister and we’re all very close. The sister bond is irreplaceable :)

  4. This is such a cute post! Happy birthday to your sis! Love the picture on the ostrich. That’s not something you see every day!

The weirdest animal I’ve ridden on is probably a camel, only because the zoo near my house has a camel-riding station-thing. I’m not incredibly adventurous with my riding buddies either. 😉

  5. That ode is too funny and love the meme at the end. LOL! I don’t think I have ever rode on anything weird… I have a brother and we are pretty close, but we live on opposite side of the country as well :(

    • I know, it’s so hard to really connect when someone lives across the country because of the time difference. Like, even if I have an hour before work or after work, it’s either wayy too early out there to call or she’s still in the middle of her work day.

  6. Happy bday to your sis! I don’t have a sister (or brother), but sometimes it sounds like I’d be fun!

I think the craziest thing I’ve ridden is a bull. My grandpa used to have cows, so he set me on his mellow bull one time when I was about 5 years old. I hardly remember it!

  7. 😆 Oh girl your birthday ode is the best. Happy Birthday to your sister! I’m an only child, and while I appreciated it when I was younger (hellooooooo attention!!), the older I got, the more I wished I had a brother or sister. I’m super close with my parents, but it would be nice to have family around my age to relate to, ya know? And I’d have to say that the craziest thing I ever rode on was a camel… but an ostrich looks like fun!!

    • Haha i want to ride on a camel one day! That and an elephant. I honestly have no desire to get on an ostrich, although my sister did it with such flair she certainly makes it look like a good time. And oh when I was growing up I always WISHED i was an only child, but yeah as we’ve gotten older we’ve gotten a lot closer.

  8. Hilarious and loving all in one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. So great- and impressive ode writing! I hope your sister is impressed!
My sister and I are super close now. We’re 2.5 years apart, and live five minutes away from each other!

  10. This is an amazing ode to your sister! What an awesome blog dedication!!!! haha, I can just hear Leslie Knope in her condescending voice saying that to Ann. So cute! I have a younger sister as well, but no brother like you! :) Happy birthday Gioia!

  11. OMG, this is the best birthday song/ode I’ve ever read! Holy crap! I narfed coffee out my nose because I was laughing so hard when I read this. :)

It’s awesome that you’re so close with your sister! I have a much younger brother (he’s 10 years younger than me) whom I adore. We don’t get to talk much — he’s in Montana, and our schedules don’t jive, like, at ALL — but I love that kid more than life itself.

    • I know, its SO hard to find time to talk when someone lives in a different time zone. in fact its nearly impossible, and when you do manage to connect it’s probably an ungodly hour at night or early in the morning for at least one of you. That’s so bad-ass he lives in montana though, what an awesome state to call home!

  12. So funny! Happy B-day to your sister! I’m very close with my sister as well. I can relate to riding around listening to songs together. We don’t see eachother very often so when we are both home we like to go ride around together like old times :)Crankin’ the radio and splitting a bag of peanut M&M’s!

I’m the baby of the family! My sister is 7 years older than I am, and my brother is 10 years older. It was a little lonely growing up, because they were moved out by the time I was old enough to want to hang out with them, lol, but now that they’ve got kids and significant others, its always so good to see them!

    • I always wanted an older sibling! I thought it would be so much fun. Yeah its always fun to get together for holidays and stuff now that everyone is grown- suddenly a 7 year age gap seems like nothing :)

Right?! That’s what, like, hits me hardest sometimes – now that we’re all more or less “grown up”, its like the age difference isn’t even there. Then again, when I was seven and she was 14 – we may as well have been universes apart! :)

  14. Haha, I love that picture of her on the ostrich, so funny!! Happy birthday to your sister! I bet she loved this. :)

  15. This was epic. I love your birthday ode! Happy Birthday to your sister!
