I’d just like to say for the record that you all are AMAZING. I laughed so hard reading the comments yesterday.

Next topic: Math is hard you guys. I’m about to illustrate why algebra I and algebra II were my worst subjects in high school:

Equation #1

Solve for X:

Blogging + Time = X

My answer: X = bag o’ money!

Correct answer: X = This.

Woman sleepign on computer keyboard

Equation #2:

Solve for Y:

Being Hydrated x Being Well Rested x Y = Running Multiple Miles At Once

My answer: Y = A cute outfit!

Correct answer: Y = Being in shape.

Equation #3:

Solve for X:

Flax Seeds + Protein Powder + Greek Yogurt + (Kale)squared x (Ice)cubed = X

My answer: Gross?

Correct answer: X = Delicious protein smoothie!

Like I said, math is hard.

I was actually a wiz at geometry, but algebra stumped me like a foreign exchange student listening to people converse in local colloquialisms- there was always an unknown piece of the sentence and I was constantly making awkward guesses.

What is/was your best subject in school? Worst?

Are you algebra-brained or geometry-brained?

54 Thoughts on “Hard Mathematics is Hard

  1. Love these equations! And that smoothie sounds hideous. Yuck! I rocked Algebra but hated Geometry. Proofs suck. Nowadays my skills are so deteriorated by mommy brain that I can barely keep up with my almost-4 y/o. Thank goodness her engineer daddy is a math whiz! I leave all complex calculations to him!

  2. Hahah I love this! Math is by FAR my worst school subject and has always been my “B” class in terms of grades. I feel like “Y” (a cute workout outfit) is a value that makes any equation equal wild success/prosperity/fantastic health/etc 😉

    Love this post!

  4. hehehe…I love this! You’re posts are always so darn witty! 😉

Yup…math was by far my worst subject in school. I hated it and had to work super hard to get a good grade.

  5. Hahahaha (ice)cubed made me laugh so hard. That’s an interesting combination for a smoothie…and an interesting color. 😉

I’m better at algebra than I am at geometry, but I’m not a particular fan of either. You know how in high school geometry class, when you do those proofs, you have to state the theorem that says why your step is what it is? We made one up–“because I said so,” abbreviated “BISS.” I don’t think our teacher appreciated it as much as we did. 😉

  6. Love this! I hate math. It is hard and I was bad all of it but I think you definitely arrived at all the correct answers. Geometry was the worst though. “Prove that this shape is a triangle.” I DON’T NEED TO PROVE IT! LOOK AT IT! It’s a damn triangle.

  8. Haha too funny! I think a cute outfit DOES help, actually. I was decent at math, but I hated philosophy. Give me something that actually has a right or wrong answer!
Kelly@KellyRunsforFood recently posted…Summer Vegetable PastaMy Profile

    • a cute outfit does help- im quite sure of it :) and ahh philosophy- i walked into my philosophy 101 class all cocky the first day like “theres no right or wrong answers, i cant do this no problem” and i walked out at the end of the semester with only 1 question: “if there are no right/wrong answers, how is it possible everything i ever said in that class was wrong?!?”

  9. Ahhhh!!!! This is awesome x 1 million.
Charlotte + blogging = my morning laughter. :) Thanks girly.
Haha I ran multiple miles this morning and though I consider myself in shape, it was tough! I LOVED math in high school – as in the only guaranteed A in high school for me. But, for some reason, when I got to college, I ditched it to be a writer. Neither have paid off for me. Hmmm.. :)

    • Oh man math was a guaranteed non-A for me in high school. i had to put all my energy and focus into just barrrrrely getting a B-. ugh it was horrible. i never took it in college, i went out of my way to take 3 sciences so i didnt have to take a math.

  10. E (Expensive Protein Powder) + C (Cute New Outfit) = M (bag O Money)

    M (bag O Money) – B (all my Bills) = W (why I can’t have anything nice!)

    I hate math!

  14. Well, considering I’m a math teacher I’d have to say my best subject was math haha! And my absolute worst subject was history. The only thing I could even find entertaining about the class was things about the Holocaust and the notes I wrote during the war movies.

I’m definitely an algebra lover, but I like geometry because it’s so abstract. 😀 Math nerd at its finest!

  15. Sooo I was a total math geek in school and loved it (for the most part). However that all being said, I can only imagine how much more I would’ve enjoyed it if my math classes were run by you…I totally failed on that lat equation 😉

  16. I actually didn’t mind algebra…when I was in high school.

Trying to relearn it 8 years later to take the GMAT? AWFUL.

Correct answer: X = DSLR Camera.

  17. If my dad wasn’t such a math wizard (aka nerd, but awesome nerd cause he’s my dad) I would have never passed 10th grade Geometry. I had no desire to prove theorems again that we already knew were true. Waste of my time. So Yeah, math is the devil and I am with you on that. My best subject was Biology (my college major) or social studies/humanities. I can memorize dates and events with the best of ’em. Pretty happy high school is over though, I really only liked lunch and sometimes gym…except when they ran the mile…oh god that was the worst day of the entire school year.
Her Happy Balance recently posted…Surprises, Shenanigans, & Southern Hospitality – Part 2!My Profile

    • omg wasnt mile day the worst?! basically my goal in gym class was to AVOID getting sweaty, which was usually somewhat doable with a little focus but on mile day all bets were off. you’d have to get all sweaty in the mile (because of course you’d run it as fast as you possibly could) and then for whatever reason that class would allllwaayyys run late, so then you’d have to run to your next class. ugh, i get hot just thinking about it.

  18. I can’t always count on you to make me laugh! :) The first equation is my favorite…so true! haha
I hated geometry and loved algebra but my geometry teacher was SO boring and had enormous, hairy nostrils that were very distracting, so that might have been why.

    • hahaha! isnt it amazing the things that stick with you from high school?? i had a teacher who would abbreviate everything- like she’d always say ” you’re OTB!” which meant, “on the ball.” lol

  19. Ha – math was my worst subject in school. It literally looks like chinese to me. I would barely get Cs in math, but an A in AP English. Go figure. So I guess I am neither algebra or geometry brained. CRAP!
Sara @ Fit.Fun.Femme recently posted…Peachtree Road Race Recap a.k.a. Party in the MudMy Profile

    • oh same!! i had to work harder than anything else in my life for the B- (i think it was actually a 78 or 79, but with a curve i got the B-) i earned as an overall grade in that algebra class. i still remember it so well because of how much effort it took. luckily my AP english came easy so i could devote all of my waking energy on not failing math!

  20. The answer for ‘X’ is hilarious and so true.

  21. Math was actually one of my best subjects. It just came naturally to me. Equations that made no sense to my peers made perfect sense to me. Haha Science on the other hand… was not my thing. I loved it, but any subject that you had to memorize a bunch of text was just not my strongest.
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green recently posted…Purple Cabbage Salad with Lemon Garlic DressingMy Profile

    • oh i would have been one of those peers looking bewildered and wondering if the math teacher was talking a foreign language. aaactually, i would have preferred if it was a foreign language. foreign languages were my forte.

  22. Wait…algebra OR geometry? There is no “none of the above”? There’s a reason I became an English teacher. :)

  23. This is awesome. I was good at math until college – then shit got real and I became a poli sci major. And as we learned yesterday – all things Greek Yogurt = bad, so your math was correct :)

    • Lol, RIGHT- we did just cover that yesterday :) and yeah its funny i spent the majority of my adolescence and college avoiding math, and then i end up working in finance. life has a funny sense of humor :)

  24. Haha! I DEFF struggled with algebra WAY more than geometry!! No idea why, it’s all the same amount of pointless to me but I guess triangles and squared made more sense to me than XYZ*/9%+Ysquared? Loved how honest your post was :)
Sarah @ Sweet Miles recently posted…Just Call Me “Hippy”My Profile

    • exactly! its not like i lovvvved proofs either, but it made more sense than all that “solve for X” business. you cant give me a bunch of letters and then tell me the answer is supposed to be a number. No. Just, no.

  25. Can I pick neither? Math and I were not friends in high school…kind of like enemies, really. English nerd all the way!

    • I know- when you see the ingredient list for healthy smoothies its always kinda “ugh” inducing- sometimes they’re good, sometimes not. i usually have to add a LOT of fruit for them to be good though.

  27. Wa ha ha ha! Found your blog today, love this post. I am brained. And actually work in the math field. I like to give answers when I use math on my blog.
