So, I’ve been slowly getting back into running lately. And on my run the other day, I went 3 whole miles without stopping once.

What’s that? Applause? For me? Oh I really don’t think that’s necess- ok.

truman show bow

Anyways I listen to Pandora’s “today’s hits” station while I run, which is cool for the most part but sometimes it pauses for a few minutes for no reason at all. During these moments, it’s just me and my thoughts.

Most runners will tell you that is a very intimate moment- just you and your thoughts, listening to your feet against pavement, your breathing, feeling your body moving through time and space, telling yourself motivational things to dig deeper, etc.

So, what are my motivational things? Well, remember SNL’s Spartan Cheerleaders?

I cheer myself on to the beat of their cheers.

Like this:

Mile 2, my music stops. My thoughts:

“Roll call!

cha cha boochie cha cha cha boochie

roll call!

my name is charlotte

(clap clap)

I’m breathing heavy

(clap clap)

but I’m still running

(clap clap)

so check me out!

…still no music…

cha cha boochie cha cha cha boochie

roll call!

my name is charlotte

(clap clap)

am I still moving?

(clap clap)

that walker passed me

(clap clap)

I might pass out”

Music comes back for a couple minutes. Then stops again. My thoughts:

“Who’s that girl who will not quit?

Its me! Its me!

Who’s that girl who wants to sit?

Its me! Its me!

Woohoo! Side cramps!”

Music comes back on for like, half a song then stops again. My thoughts:

“So you want to finish strong?

then run right through the pain,

although i think its safe to say,

you ain’t no Prefontaine

Prefontaine! Where is he?

I dunno, I dunno!

Prefontaine! Where is he?

I dunno, I dunno!”

And then the music came back on in time for the hill that I encounter at the end of my route, which isn’t fun, but the downhill part on the other side IS fun so it’s good motivation to get to the top. I purposely save that hill for the end (rather than running the loop in the opposite direction) because I heart running downhill that much. It makes me feel like I’m fast :)

What’s your favorite SNL skit?

Do you like running downhill?

Do you prefer hills in the beginning or end of your route? Or not at all?

ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT THE NEW ROYAL BABY?? (personally, I haven’t been this excited about a birth since that of Suri Cruise, which is to say, very.)

  1. Spartan cheerleaders RULE! This really is the perfect cheer! So awesome that you’re getting back into running. Pretty soon you’ll be as crazy as the rest of us. Beware…it’s a slippery slope! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE downhill running, especially on trails. Too bad you have to run up first, but the painful uphill is worth the rockin’ descent!

  2. Haha I love it! I have mental cheering/whining/motivating talks in my head while I run as well. I also have a hill in my neighborhood so I do the run up/down thing at the beginning and the end. It’s pretty much the only hill on the whole route so I don’t mind it!

  4. Yay…congrats on getting through your run without stopping!!! That’s always my goal! 😉

I don’t like hills, but if I had to choose, I would say in the beginning. This way I can get them over with because usually by the end of my run I’m dying!

  5. Good job running! You deserve that cheer and much more :) My favorite SNL skit is dick-in-a-box. My love for JT only grows with time and that skit may have sealed the deal for me. I was also a huge fan of Collin Quinn’s Weekend Update back in the day. Keep up the 3 miles!!!! recently posted…Target Practice + Key Largo PicsMy Profile

  8. Sooo the song is brilliant, and I think that you need to write me one. Although that would involve me running more than 15 minutes of sprints, and I can’t promise that will happen anytime soon.

  10. First of all, this is an awesome post. I listen to Pandora “Pitbull” radio (I have no shame) and it also pauses randomly which is super annoying! I usually do weird stuff to fill the pause like count sidewalk cracks or stare at houses and their flowers or occasionally if I am dying do a lot of mental cursing. And secondly, I’m about a 5 on the excitement scale. I’m happy that it’s a boy, and also happy that it wasn’t born early on my bday so I would forever be overshadowed by some British kid haha

    • iii know, not that its on the same scale, but i was so afraid the kim kardashian baby was going to be born on my birthday. i would not have been okay with that :)

  11. I didn’t care too much about the royal baby. Does that make me a bad person? Lol! I sing to myself alllll the time when my music comes out or I’ll start making up stories in my head. It’s so weird. And I love having hills at the end of the run because I think it builds your strength more since you’re already fatigued!

    • i agree! granted, its never that easy because when i do it in the beginning its hard because my legs arent warmed up yet. however, going downhill is always a good time :)

  12. Haha! I’m laughing so hard right now!

I was kind of excited for the Royal Baby. I don’t know why but the frenzy just kind of got me!

I prefer no hills at this point, thank you very much.
My favorite SNL skit would have to be the one with Justin Timberlake on veganism a few months ago. That was awesome.

  17. Meh, I’m not too fond of the royal baby for obvious reasons (read my story to find out why) Sure, i’m totally happy for them but shit it’s like a dagger through the heart every time I hear about said baby.

I love the SNL skits! the spartans are one of my favs too!

I heart this blog. You know Erica actually was a Spartan, not a cheerleader though, unless the short skirts tennis players wear count.

  19. Oh no please don’t have royal baby fever too….I turn on the TV and that is all there is on all channels! I think anyone that runs over 1 mile deserves applause, so for you, standing ovation STAT. Maybe your next run can entail actually wearing a cheerleading uniform, it might make the hills more appealing to run it. Or at least add some authenticity to it :p

best SNL skit- without a doubt Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin… classic!

Lol- you should totally be a freestyle rapper! For some reason I read your poems and now your cheers as rap!
I’m not the biggest fan of downhill running, mostly because it hurts my knees.

  24. Congrats on the run! You’ll get into more with each one you too. I get discouraged sometimes because one day I’ll run 5 miles and the next day I can barely run one. But sometimes we just need a little break to get back into it! And I am also currently obsessed with the royal baby.. GEORGE!
