So, in my family people are classified into two groups: “Sports-girls” and “Louisa’s”. A sports-girl is she who is good at sports, and a Louisa is she who is less athletically inclined than others. Most notably, myself.

The origins of the name is a very long story. One for another day.

To completely misquote Gretchen Wieners: “you may think you’re a sports-girl, but, you could be wrong.” You’ll have to ask your family or consult this list.

Top 8 Signs You’re a Louisa

8. Your family’s motto is “we may be crazy, but we’re not lazy” while your personal motto is “I don’t mean to be a grouch, but I’m all set here on the couch”

7. After a 4-hour hike up and down a Colorado mountain with your mom and sister, they suggest it’s time for sit ups and arm work and you suggest they have lost their minds

6. You believe there is a time and a place for squats. Everybody else in your family begs to differ.

5. At any given moment, if your face is beet red, it is much more likely that you have done or said something to humiliate yourself, rather than due to aerobic activity.

4. You dance around on the tennis court instead of paying attention to the ball. And everyone is always reminding you to bend your knees.

3. When given the opportunity to participate in “double sessions,” you hope at least one involves a therapist

2. While you consider it “double sessions” your family doesn’t even count that run they did earlier as a real workout

1. If, while on the phone with your mom at the end of the day,  you mention you’re going to walk a mile to pick up dinner and she tells you that if she lived in Boston, she’d put on her sneakers and RUN to pick up dinner, then you are the Louisa of the family.

I hope this was helpful.

Do you come from an athletic family?

Does your family exercise together?

Are there more Louisa’s or sports-girls in your fam?

  1. As always, your posts are hilarious and the perfect start to the day! But I don’t think you’re giving yourself enough credit. You’re totally a sports girl, rockin’ the bar method!

I’m definitely the sports girl in my family. My brother & sister played soccer & basketball growing up, but now I’m the crazy one who runs marathons. Of course, I think my daughters are well on their way to being the most awesome, most adorable sports girls EVER!

    • Aw thanks you’re so sweet :) i’m definitely more of a sports girl now than i was in, say, my late teens :) and yes you guys are an amazing family full of sports girls!!

  2. hahaha…so funny! Well, I would consider myself more of the sports-girl of the family. My family is not really athletic, and my mom and I used to exercise together when I was living at home. Since I moved out of the house she stopped working out, but I’ve been desperately trying to get her started again. She can be stubborn sometimes. Sigh!

    • its amazing how people’s fitness habits can change depending on who’s around to influence them. like when im visiting home on vacation or for holidays, my exercise habits go up tenfold.

  3. I completely agree with Nicole- give yourself more credit! You are rocking bar classes, and don’t forget about your three miler lately!
I sure do love how active your family is, especially the squats in the airport!
My dad is super active, my sister used to be, and my mom walks a lot. Mostly, they think I’m crazy. Is there a name for someone who works out more than their family thinks is normal!?

  4. And I thought there was just sibling rivalry… 😉 jk I guess I’m more on the sporty side, but I still bond regularly with my couch.
    Tiff recently posted…Thursday ThoughtsMy Profile

    • Lol, oh yeah nobody is safe from a little friendly competition :) i have a similar outlook now that i’m older- i feel like i finally figured out how to balance the couch vs the fitness :)

  5. I definitely have a more athletically-inclined family…although I think my mom would be the Louisa. 😉 My dad was a gymnast for his college way back when and strength trains every night and plays in a tennis league…aka he’s crazy. My sister occasionally plays tennis for 6 hours a day, and then there’s me, who, after a 6 mile run, just wants to plop on the couch for a few hours. 😉

    • yeah you have a very sporty fam! (welcome back, btw!!) and thats so cool your dad was a gymnast, that’s so hardcore especially at the college level.

  6. Louisa – too freaking funny! Squats in the airport…your family is awesome. Can I come on your next vacation? I am unquestionably the most athletic person in my family and that’s not saying too much. If we’re going to workout or run it’s always me begging everyone to get off the couch and move their butts.

  7. I love this! I don’t know which one I am…I feel like I’m active, but only at the gym or if I’m setting out specifically to be active. For example, the first few months of work I biked. As soon as Eric finished his contract and the car became available. I immediately started driving the 5 miles. As in, have not been on my bike since. Running to get dinner or squats in the airport? Nope. Unlikely.
And my family is on the active side – brother and dad are both gym goers, and my parents play volleyball all winter and golf and baseball all summer. None of which I have any interest in participating in.

    • I feel like you have a really good balance! which is key. i think being active in a healthy way is all about finding that balance for oneself individually, if that makes sense.

  8. I definitely do not come from an athletic family although my dad and brother do workout a couple times a week! My mom is the Louisa in my family because she doesn’t know what to make of a squat. She doesn’t know much about exercise at all LOL. It’s kind of funny actually!

  9. Hmm can I be a mix of both of these? I definitely don’t mind looking atrocious with raccoon eyes going to the supermarket after a workout…and then there are times when I will only drink out of a straw at the side of my mouth so i don’t mess up my lip gloss. My family isn’t overly athletic. I’m probably the most interested in fitness out of all of them. I convinced my mom to get a gym membership and she came and worked out with me for a month or two, but that’s about it haha. Yeah, I think looking at my extended family, we have more Louisa’s.

  10. I think my favorite part of this post is the look on the woman’s face in the background as your dad is doing airport squats, haha. My family has never been full of fitness junkies, but they all work hard (farm family) and like to take long walks, so I guess we’re somewhere in the middle.

    • lol i didnt even notice that lady! (thats actually my step-dad, i forgot to add the captions) and a farm family DEFINITELY counts as an active family- especially considering all the research coming out about how bad sitting all day is! can i come join the farming?? :)

  11. Hahahah this is hilarious! I’d like to think that I’m one of the more athletic ones in the family but what can I say – we all have our “Louisa” days 😉

  12. My dad and my brother are SUPER athletic. Even though my mom isn’t, she works out everyday, does Body Pump, and takes yoga.

So yeah, I’m probably the Louisa.

  13. Hahaha this is too funny! I’m probably the sports-girl in my family. My parents joined this crazy fancy gym and I’m pretty sure they only go to use the rooftop pool!

  14. So funny! I love how different you are from your mom and sister :) My dad was always the athletic one between he and my mom, and then between my brother and I, I lucked out the the athletic genes while my brother got the musical genes. Crazy how different siblings can be!
Sarah @ Sweet Miles recently posted…One of Those WeeksMy Profile

    • isn’t funny how different siblings are?! my sister and i were talking about that the other day. in some way we’re identical but in most ways we could not be more opposite :)

  15. Haha I love it. My family is pretty athletic. My parents actually met at a gym, and they both are fitness junkies. So we definitely are all sports lovers. Well, let me take that back we all love to workout. But, we all kind of suck at group sports. Especially me. I’m so clumsy and competitive, I know I could never to group things. I tried playing soccer once and it was basically one hot mess of me falling over everything.
Lisa recently posted…Healthy Strawberry FrappeMy Profile

    • lol your description of soccer made me laugh :) and thats so cool about how your parents met! thats so sweet, i guess just by meeting there you already know you share a love of fitness. i love that!

  16. Good morning Louisa! It is not even noon as of yet and I have run for 50 minutes, weights for 20 minutes, hiked 4 miles and just about to jump on my bike just to enjoy the sun and breeze in my face! XoXo your Mother!

  17. You kill me…who needs to do cruches when I get an ab workout everyday just reading your posts :)

I would be the sporty one…although my sister has taken somewhat of an interest in physical activity this past year

  18. Haha! I love this! Hilarious. Is your family seriously like this? My family is not so athletic so I guess I’m not the Louisa of the family. Although when my parents tried to get me into soccer when I was six I did run around on the field doing cartwheels while everyone else chased the ball! :)
FitBritt@MyOwnBalance recently posted…National Dance Day Plus a Giveaway to Get Your Groove On!My Profile

    • Lol, yep, they’re really enthusiastic about fitness- its all about balance though, and if i didnt have them to influence me, i’d probably be spending wayy too much time on the couch :)

  19. I’ve never heard the term Louisa used before! Aw, you poor thing. I love that your family is so athletic! The pictures of your parents doing squats at the airport are priceless! Haha.
My family is not athletic at all so I’m not the Louisa but I’m not a “sports-girl” either. Somewhere in between, I suppose.

  20. Number 7 is my life! My mom, my sister, and I went hiking in Death Valley in April and one day we did an 8 mile hike, and I was ready to go back to the room and nap, and they were more than ready to do more, which to my despair, we ended up doing!

  21. Hahahaah – I love this! My whole family is a Louisa, I am the only active one! I’m always like let’s walk around the airport or do some wall sits or planks while we’re waiting and they look at me like I’m a crazy person 😉

Hilarious! I’d forgotten about Louisa until I read this. Wasn’t she a non sports girl on one of Carly’s soccer teams? As if Carly should be one to point a finger in that direction… :)

  23. Charlotte, you need to add a description to the top of all your blog posts ‘NSFL’- Not Safe For Lectures. Although I should have been focusing on the lecturer, I couldn’t help but begin my procrastination by going through my reader and nearly burst out loud reading this. Ironically, the lecturer was going over ways to fail the course….

i was a male version of a louisa growing up.. a Lois? lol, my sister was all for being fit and exercising everywhere, me on the other hand- I remember asking if we could get those lifts that go up stairs for the elderly installed in our house.

  24. Let’s just say that my sister is currently hiking Mt. Whitney. On purpose. Just because she can. And that little adventure required her to wake up at 2:00 a.m. so she could “be on the trail by 3:00 a.m.”. I am currently wearing my jammies still sipping coffee at my keyboard. Pretty sure we know who the Louisa is in this family! 😉 This post made me LAUGH OUT LOUD!!-Ashley
