(Alternate title: “What’s on my phone? Why I thought you’d never apps!”)

For those of you who read this blog consistently, you are probably aware that it is more of a fitness/lifestyle/ random musings about nothing in particular type o’ blog rather than a strictly fitness type.  I like to call it a fitness “fusion” blog, as it seems to work for restaurants who insist on combining two ingredients that have no business being on the same plate, and yet somehow turn out delicious.

So with that principle in mind, today we’re going to fuse fitness with technology, and you’re going to get a look at my apps.

I said apps, not ass.

Minions.

Top 8 Apps on This Fitness Blogger’s Phone (besides text and email)

8. Candy Crush

Candy_Crush icon

Because all fitness and no candy does not a happy blogger make.

7. RunKeeper

runkeeper-logo

Ha ha ha actually anyone who reads this blog also knows there is no real need for this one at the moment. But it keeps sending me notifications saying that “last week you thought this was a great time for a run”…  Stop trying to control my thoughts, RunKeeper.

6. Pandora

pandora-logo

Not only do I need music if/when I run, I sometimes need it when I walk long distances like the 2 miles from my office to the good Pinkberry. And I also need to be up on the cool jams because my very cool sister is getting sick of me asking her “so, what are the cool jams?”

5. Maps

maps app

Because I am forever getting lost. And while I mean that in both the philosophical and physical senses of that phrase, Maps only helps with the latter. And like Joey from Friends, I enjoy the feature that lets you be in the map.

4. WordPress

wordpress-logo

Because once you have a blog, the blog actually has you.

3. Bloglovin’

bloglovin app

Because I care about whats going on in the lives of bloggers I have never met as much as my own family.

2. Starbucks

Starbucks app png

Because paying for my daily grande venti non-fat blonde misto with my phone makes me feel like I live in the future.

1. Bar Method

bar method app

Yup, Bar Method!

bar method app

I actually just discovered this on Saturday and it thrills me to no end. The fact I didn’t know about this sooner utterly blows my mind. I’ve just been opening and closing it just to look at it. Natalie– did you know about this??

What are your favorite apps?

Which ones do you use most often (besides text and email)?

  1. Haha I hate when fitness apps try to send me “gentle” reminders. I’ll do what I want! I have most of those apps too. I also love the My Fitness Pal app and the books app. I love reading books on my phone so I’m never bored!
Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food recently posted…Eating My Feelings….Is Butter a Carb?!My Profile

  2. Fitness fusion – LOVE it! Because I’m chained to my computer most of the day, I don’t use too many apps on my phone, although I check my gmail non-stop. I do use the Weather Channel app and the Delta app when I travel. I stream Pandora on my computer throughout the day – it’s the best!
Nicole @ Work in Sweats Mama recently posted…Marathon Update: FIRST to the FinishMy Profile

    • The weather app really should have made my list too- i check it all the time. and do you ever use that passbook app when you travel? it keeps track of all my boarding passes, i like it a lot!

  3. Instagram (again gotta keep current with people we have never met or actually had a conversation with) and the new app I just got Rhonna – a pic design app
Michelle @ 3 cheaprunners recently posted…July Foodie Penpals Reveal DayMy Profile

  4. So I know I told you I was going to Pure Barre when you posted your guest post on Tara’s blog…well, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. The better news is that there’s a Bar Method studio that’s very easy to get to in Houston near my school, so I’ll definitely be visiting that at some point this coming year!…hopefully. Ideally. 😉

Also, totally judging you for using Apple’s Maps app instead of Google Maps…I guess I’ll always be a Google girl at heart. 😛

  5. Minions! Eeehehe… love it <3

You already know Candy Crush is one of my favorites (although I've cut down a lot lately), but other than that? Instagram, Bloglovin, Twitter, PicFrame, and Emoji. That clearly shows where my priorities lie… gaming and blogging 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons. recently posted…. thinking out loud #39 .My Profile

    • ohh candy crush, i’ve cut down a lot too but its still great for those moments when you’re computer is taking for-ev-er to restart or you’re waiting for the water to boil for pasta… (and yes, i have a problem with just doing nothing, evidently) i need to join instagram and twitter… its getting ridiculous…

  6. Okay, I’m pathetic…I don’t have a smartphone! And it’s driving me crazy…ahhh! I have to wait until the end of the year before I can get one! :-(
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat recently posted…Guest Posting For Fit ‘n’ CookiesMy Profile

  7. I’m SO glad candy crush is on this list. I mean I wouldn’t want to have non fitness blogging apps on my blog righhttttt? Bloglovin and Nike Training are probably my top apps. I check Bloglovin religiously. I read blogs like they’re the morning paper. Instagram has also become a perfectly acceptable way to photograph everything I set my eyes on and show it to complete strangers. It’s casual.
Katherine recently posted…I Got That Green Thumb. My Profile

  8. You are such a lucky girl…It is either an App giving you reminders or it’s your Mother!
carlotta recently posted…Day (485) – It’s Never Too LateMy Profile

  9. I almost have all of these! I have yet to become an addict to Candy Crush – replace that with the outdated Words with Friends. Replace Run Keeper with Nike app and replace Blog Lovin’ with I don’t know… I don’t have it! :)
My favorite app is Instagram (sorry I know you don’t do social media haha!) but I’m obsessed. It makes me feel just a teensy bit creative which makes me feel worthy of contributing to the world.
And also, your blog is fitness fusion fabulous and I freaking love it.
Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures recently posted…Lots of Working OutMy Profile

    • i neeeeed to start doing social media. instagram and twitter here i come! and i should really probably start actually using my facebook account. ok ok social media here i come!

  10. I knew about the BM app! Isn’t it awesome?!?! It makes life as a Bar junkie so much easier. They actually just updated it and it’s much better now. Sorry I didn’t tell you about it :(

Two things: (1) is there more than one BM studio in Boston? (2) what makes the “good” pinkberry, good? Happy Thursday!!!!
    Natalie@fit.fun.femme. recently posted…Wordless WednesdayMy Profile

    • i have no idea why it took me so long to have the thought “huh i wonder if there’s an app?” anyways, 1. there is 1 BM in the city, and 1 in a suburb near the city. 2. the pinkberry close to my office is more like a stand than a store- the good one is bigger, the line moves quicker and in my opinion, cleaner!

  11. Confession: I’ve all but given up on Candy Crush. At level 29. I’m not impressed with myself at all (in my defense, it was crashing every time I opened it for a while, and by the time they updated it I had kinda lost interest).
I use Instagram and Twitter, for the most part…and The Weather Network, because I’d rather have my phone tell me if it’s cold outside than actually go outside and check.

  12. I actually don’t have wordpress or bloglovin’ on my phone at all….um how am I even a blogger.
I still haven’t tried candy crush! I’m not giving in yet! My friends all tried to convince me to get it, but nope. I’m staying strong. I really don’t need another addiction in my life 😉
I want that bar method app!
I think the one I use most is probably instagram…and yah that’s about it. I have like no apps. Oh wait, I forgot about sudoku. That’s for sure my most used.
Lisa recently posted…Taking In MomentsMy Profile

  13. I’ve cut back significantly on my Candy Crush addiction (Thankfully), but my favorites are probably BlogLovin’ and Sudoku! Math nerd at its finest 😉

  14. Love this post! I also use SIT for interval timing and when I’m too lazy to make up a workout I often use PumpUp. Candy crush addict right here!

  15. I use the RunKeeper App and I sometimes wonder if the GPS in accurate on that thing. Either that or I just get really tired and wonder why the mileage isn’t moving faster!

I had no idea you could pay for Starbuck’s through their app either…what is the world coming to? 😉

I use the maps and Instagram the most. Are you on Instagram or Twitter yet? You need to add those apps!!
Sarah @ making thyme for health recently posted…Easy Summer Veggie Salad (vegan and gluten-free)My Profile

    • i REALLY need to join instagram and twitter. its so absurd i havent yet. and lol i totally agree the gps on runkeeper is totally messed up- sometimes it doesnt move and sometimes im quite sure it tells me i ran way farther than i did (i really dont mind the 2nd option :) )

  16. I’ve never used Run Keeper, but I love Map My Run! Except the other day when it spazzed out and said I ran 3 miles in 10 minutes. Wouldn’t that be nice?

  17. I’m just going to highjack this post and tell you my top 8:
    1. Instagram
    2. Bloglovin
    3. Alien Blue (reddit)
    4. Pandora
    5. GOOGLE maps (not Apple! Judging you!)
    6. Bubble Shooter
    7.Yelp
    8. Buycott!
    Tara recently posted…Chimichurri SauceMy Profile

    • I’ve never heard of Buycott before, but i’ve just been researching it- AWESOME looking app, i just downloaded it. also if this was a top 10 list, alien blue would have been added , along with weather :)

  18. So many of these are true, especially and sadly Candy Crush. If you like RunKeeper (I swore by it for at least 2 years) you will love Map My Run. Wife turned me on to it and it is a little better that RunKeeper. But don’t tell RunKeeper it will send me a nasty notice I’m sure of it.
Tom T. recently posted…Motivational Monday! – FitspoMy Profile

  19. I don’t know how I don’t have the WordPress app! My most used apps are Twitter and Instagram but I also love this meditation app called Simply Being. It is awesome and will help you fall asleep so I don’t recommend it for workout on the train. Trust me, I’ve used it at both those places!

  20. I’m happy that Candy Crush topped your list – it’s pretty much my favorite app!! I also like Words with Friends a lot!!
    Kim recently posted…Even Adults Need a Time-Out Sometimes!!My Profile

  21. I truly app-reciate all these recommendations (pun totally intended)! Lately I’ve been hooked on the Map My Run app & Words With Friends. Some other favourites include FoodGawker, Zite, CNN & of course Instaaaa :)!
Khushboo recently posted…Just my cup of tea…My Profile

  22. I use the Instagram app like it’s my job, but sadly it is not my job. If it were though…

And I also really like Shazam and A Beautiful Mess. I love looking through my shazam tags and seeing the crazy variety of music I end up liking, so that’s always fun :)

  23. Ok, hold the phone, Bloglovin has an iphone app??? I am embarrassed I did not know this! I will admit though that I have the Hobby Lobby app. And you better believe I whip it out and take full advantage of their coupons every time I’m in a crafty mood! Are there Hobby Lobby’s up in Boston???
Sarah @ Sweet Miles recently posted…48 Days – Day 1My Profile

    • no unfortunately there’s no hobby lobby in boston! i went to college in ohio where i think i probably went to hobby lobby more than the grocery store- for sorority stuff, theme parties, or no reason at all… LOVE that store!

  24. MiCoach is probably my number one app, but maps saves. my. life. I have ZERO sense of direction so I’m pretty sure I would just wind up driving in circles without maps….
I seriously need to get that Starbucks app. Sometimes I feel like I live in that place (and I honestly wish I did!).
Also, I saw your last post about your honey mustard addiction, and I just wanted to say that you are not alone. I go through about a bottle of that stuff a week, and if my stash gets low, well let’s just say I kind of freak out and it is NOT a pretty sight. 😉

  26. you actually like the maps app??? I swear every time I use it, it sends me in the wrong direction or longer time route! then I vow never to use it again…which lasts for maybe a day lol!

Currently I am obsessed with snapchat, but that EATS your battery! And I deleted Candy Crush until I do all my assignments. Its just too darn tempting!
Arman @ thebigmansworld recently posted…Off the cuff Fridays 2/8/13My Profile

    • i know, everybody hates the apple maps but i love it- its never given me the wrong directions, i just love it! snapchat is so fun! and so smart to erase candy crush… i probably should…. but will i? probably not…

  27. This is super exciting to me because I just got an iPhone yesterday. I know. I’m very up with the times and crap like that. I have been going a little free-app crazy today, so I don’t have a favorite yet. Thanks for giving me more ideas for what to download. :)

  28. I am all about Songza these days! I can’t get enough. I also love my instagram app for distracting me while I plank :)
Karen @ Runner Girl Eats recently posted…Fitness Friday and at home CrossfitMy Profile

  29. Out of all of these I use WordPress and Bloglovin’. I also overuse Twitter, Instagram, and A Beautiful Mess. Oh, and Facebook, obviously :)

  30. Alright Alright, call me crazy… but I only have like 3 apps on my phone. Candy Crush, Bubble Shooter (just as addictive) and an Mp3 player. After reading some comments I feel like I’m living back in the past and haven’t moved forward with all the cool apps that are out there, Ha Ha!
jessielovestorun recently posted…Growing Naturals Giveaway! My Profile

  31. This is why I don’t have a work out app on my phone. I don’t need an app all up in my face throwing my aspirations back at me. I feel bad enough when I see clothes hanging on my elliptical machine to dry, thankyouverymuch!

But other than that, we have a lot of them the same!! Although I did have to delete Candy Crush about 2 months ago because it was taking up every second of my free time. I had to go cold turkey.

I have to look into Bar Method, though. It looks like something I need to know about. –Lisa

    • i’m going to have to delete candy crush soon- its such an easy excuse not to do anything else. like, it makes my old procrastination habits look productive by comparison.

  32. I love this, especially the reasoning for ‘blog lovin’!! I agree! And now I am definitely downloading run keeper and bar! I had no idea a Bar app existed. YAY!

  34. You sound like Meghan with your Starbucks app. I’m not allowed to buy her a drink there because she insists on using her app so she can get free drinks, haha. Let’s see: Pandora – for cool jams too, oddly enough, Wells Fargo – so i’m constantly reminded that I’m broke, Map My Run – so I can see just how slowly I run, Instagram – I am officially addicted, Google Maps – mostly for traffic purposes, Photo Grid – now that I have Instagram. That’s only 6 but that’s really all I use unless you’re counting my camera widget. That shit gets worn out. I need to look into this whole bar method thing.
Rebekah @ fitnesscreatures recently posted…Why Does it Have to End?My Profile

    • Yes! going to starbucks with me is a treat for whoever wants to come because i insist on always paying!! not only is it fun, but i get free drinks and stuff, theres no downside!! :) and lol yeah i have 2 bank apps both which hold all the money i don’t have. but, you know, i’m ready for when that $$ wants to come rolling in… any day now…

  35. This is actually a very touchy, sensitive question for me because my most favoritest, bestest ever app, Astrid, just closed down. It managed my To Do list and had every single feature that I love, as well as an adorable little mascot that would give (gentle) reminders to take care of shit, like, “Why don’t you finish this so you can go play?” or “How about a snack after you get this done?” and “Every time you ignore me, I die a little.”

I haven’t yet found a suitable replacement…and I have done so much research and trial and error. Grr!

I also love Instagram, but that’s something else :)

  36. i saw that! i actually have astrid too and eric and i used to use it all the time to send tasks to each other- usually like, from across the room like “please hand me the remote” but it was so great!! im sad that its shutting down.

  37. Runkeeper, Instagram/Facebook, Spotify and Evernote are must haves for me.

Also, we just released a new app for the iPhone called FoodSnap! that was our answer to all the various calorie counting apps that take way too much time to use. Our app is based on the idea that a simple photo of your food is enough to get you to start thinking about what you are eating, and to keep yourself accountable. You can learn more and download it at http://bit.ly/foodsnap, or let me know if you’d like to try it and I can get you a free redemption code if you are interested!

Apps and fitness/nutrition is a fun place to be in!
