So over the weekend I thought I was watching golf, but it turns out I was watching Bar Method. Outside. With polo shirts. I’ll explain.

As you may or may not know, the PGA championship was this past weekend. And if you happened to be in the mood for that specific brand of toned-down excitement and understated fun that watching golf typically provides, this weekend’s tournament did not disappoint. But there was also something else. Something unexpected. There was also, Bar Method.

Bar Method is everywhere you guys, and I’m about to demonstrate.

In Bar Method we do an exercise called “Chair” that looks like this:

bar method chair

On the golf course, it looks like this:

golfers chair 1

2. In bar method there is an exercise called “Arabesque” that looks like this:

bar method arabesque

On the golf course, it looks like this:

golfer arabesque

3. In Bar Method, the thigh work portion of class looks like this:

bar method thigh

On the golf course, it looks like this:

golfer thigh

4. And in Bar Method, we are constantly being told to squeeze our glutes like this:

bar method tuck

Aaand on the golf course, it looks like this:

BMW PGA Championship - Day Three

So, there you have it. I think the photographic evidence speaks for itself. Aside from the whole get-the-ball-in-the-hole part, Golf is simply Bar Method in more formal attire.

What do you think?

Do you play golf? (Personally, my golfing abilities cap out at the “miniature” level)

Whats your favorite sport to watch?

  1. Ba ha ha ha, I love this! Who knew the most boring spectator sport in the world had roots in Bar Method?! I’ve been to the driving range a few times, but no matter which club I use, my ball always goes the exact same (short) distance. My putting skills are slightly better after years of mini-golf at the beach during spring break, but I simply don’t have the patience for golf!
Nicole @ Work in Sweats Mama recently posted…My Optic Nerve Love FestMy Profile

    • golf takes a lot of patience! my driving skills are poor, to put it kindly. but yes my mini golf skills are quite good thanks to all those summer outings when i was younger too

  2. Ha! I have played golf and it is way harder than the bar method, but maybe it is because I didn’t have the right form! The last time I played was before the bar method got so popular. Maybe I should try again!

  4. This is an amazing realization! I just did chair this morning and I think I hate it as much as I dislike watching golf on TV. I’m sure it’s fun to play, and I love being outside, but watching it on TV is a quick trip to snooze-town for me! I love that you see Bar everywhere :) It makes me feel as though I’m not the only crazed, addicted person! recently posted…Five Things FridayMy Profile

    • Its soo addicting! im not necessarily proud of the fact i see it everywhere, it just happens. ha i should probably take a yoga or pilates class just to mix things up a bit :)

  5. lol…love it! But you are SO right! Who new golf and the barre method had so much in common!?!

Definitely NOT a golf fan! I find it to be kind of boring and I’m just not into it. I prefer watching football…much more exciting.

  6. Haha! I never noticed the comparison before but you are right! I do play golf so I will have to take note if I am doing these exercises next time I play!

  7. I love the comparison!!! And the pictures are awesome!!
I don’t call what I do playing golf – I try. When I go golfing with my husband, he likes to ride in the cart and I prefer walking – we compromise – I let my clubs be strapped on the cart but I hit the ball, run up to it with my club in hand, hit, run, hit, run – I’m sure the true golfers hate me but I like the exercise!! And, if I start getting stressed because I want to be better, I just drink beer – all good!!!

  13. I haven’t played golf in a few years. I used to go to the driving range and play on a 9 hole practice course pretty frequently, but like the boyfriend that brought golf into my life…it left when I kicked him out of it haha!

  14. I feel like I say this a lot, but this is why I love you so much. One of my college friends was an awesome golfer in high school and still hits around on the soccer fields every now and then, but I’ve never liked golf. I’ve always thought it was so boring to watch. And I’m definitely lacking in the hand-eye coordination department, so that’s another strike against it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My favorite sport to watch is either tennis or running, which, arguably, could be just as boring (if not more so…) than golf. But hey, to each her own, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • oh i lovvve watching tennis! its one of the only sports i’ll actually turn to purposely even if i’m by myself. i’ll even say aloud “hey what time is the tennis on?” which is not typical of me.

  15. I used to always say that I would play golf when I couldn’t play real sports anymore. Then I started getting older and got really out of shape, so I had my golf years. I got to be okay at it, and even enjoyed it to a certain extent, but when I got back in shape I gave up golf for running.
Funny how my old golf buddies will question how I can go running for 2 or 3 hours while they have no problem chasing a little white ball around for 4 or 5 hours…
Mike @ 3 Cheap Runners recently posted…When Recovery Runs Turn Into Recovery WeeksMy Profile

    • yup- they call it a “life sport” since you can play it after your peak athletic years are behind you. at the rate you’re going it’ll probably be a long, long time til you pick it back up again!

  16. Omg you are too funny!! This post cracked me up!
I definitely think you’ve captured the true essence of golf. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My golfing limits end at the mini golf course as well… and I’m still pretty bad at that haha! But it sure is a lot of fun, even if it doesn’t include all the majestic moves that regular golfing does. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I completely mean this as a compliment- you seem so east coast to me- playing tennis, watching golf, etc!
I used to attempt to ‘play’ golf. It usually involved me driving the golf cart drinking Caesars and hopping out every few holes to hit the ball. But, I do have cute pink golf clubs!

  18. Well, I’m already interested in trying out Bar Method, so I guess this is the only way I could possibly feign an interest in golf ๐Ÿ˜‰ My parents are both big golfers (my dad’s retired and goes a few times a week) and anytime there’s a tournament on, they absolutely have to watch it. Whereas me…not so much. I can mini golf, but that’s as far as my interest goes. And if it’s on TV i have to leave the room. So.Boring.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles recently posted…EDs: The Myth of: “You Chose To Be Like This”.My Profile

    • yup- i can get into it for a little while, but then i have to do something else, then i’ll get back into it for a few minutes, but i cant keep my attention focus on golf on TV for too long at a time.

Unfortunately, it’s taken some golf bashing, but I finally understand what Bar Method is all about. The question remains, do women look better in shorts or skirts? Please copy your mother on your answer.

    • i know it, there has been quite a bit of golf bashing, i think im going to start playing more often and writing super positive posts on it! and, generally speaking, i vote skirts!

  20. Uh yeah, they’re totally just doing bar moves.
I really really want to try barre. You should teach it! You’re clearly passionate about it. You could teach it then write about it! Ha! New career found! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  21. Golf is a decent workout/exercise ONLY if you walk 18 and put down the beer! They way most people ‘play’ golf, from a cart and with beer in hand is not exercise at all. But as you have pointed out if done with an eye on fitness it can be a wonderful workout.

  25. haha…an extremely well written post. Only you could think of commonalities and make it funny.

  37. Love this! The postures really do look similar, ha!

We don’t really have gym access here and legs can be kinda hard to work with only bodyweight exercises, so I taught Chris a few of the moves that I remembered from the barre class. He was like, “Are my legs supposed to shake?!” and I said, “If they aren’t shaking, then you aren’t low enough!” ๐Ÿ˜€
