So last week we covered the Top 8 Signs You’re an Introverted Exerciser. Today we’re going to continue our psychology series and cover the other, more social personality type, the extroverted exerciser.

8. Talking to someone while you run is a must. If your running buddy flakes out, you’ve been known to make calls to friends from your run. These friends no longer find it weird when you say “hello!” completely out of breath and then launch into a story between gasps for air.

7. The girl on the elliptical next to you knows all about that insensitive comment your boyfriend said right before you left for the gym, which you now feel much better about, after having talked it out.

6. In a group exercise environment, you somehow manage to make conversation with everyone and nobody in particular at the same time.

I do enjoy running with friends, but you’ll never find me on the phone while I’m working out! 1. I’m not coordinated enough & would end up face planting! 2. If you can talk on the phone, you’re not working hard enough!

  3. Whoops, this is totally me in most ways… I love posting my shizzz on IG so that a bunch of people can ‘like’ it. Ha! I love running with people, but I don’t love talking whilst doing so just yet… Though I feel I’m on the verge of such a revelation!! :) Ha! I prefer social 5K’s as my means of hanging out and the thought of working out alone in any basement makes me sleepy. :) I pull my energy from within mostly, but I do love company while I’m working out a sweat.   4. I’m an extrovert in life but an introvert in the gym. I love working out AFTER it is done…aka I work out as fast as I can and book it out of there. No time for socializing…I have been known to fall asleep on the benches though!

  6. Haha yay I’ve been looking forward to this post! And I think it might just prove that I’m actually an introverted exercise. I like working out/running with others, but it isn’t a must and it can’t be just anyone, it has to be friend or a family member. Others are often very motivating, but I find that I pull my energy from within. Anyway, thank you for helping me sort this out and helping me find that I’m much more of an introverted exerciser – I can sleep better at night now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. Introvert in life, and introvert in exercising… Except for the “working out in the basement makes you sleepy” one – that’s definitely true for me. I tend to pull most of my energy from within, but I have to admit that I have a competitive side to me, and having someone to [secretly] compete with usually helps me push myself harder than I normally would.

    • oh i do that secret competition all the time. i normally pick a girl in bar method that i know is more advanced than me, and little does she know we’re in competition for the rest of class :)

  11. Those faces made me laugh (partly because I know a couple of people who always have the same expression no matter what!!).
    I was pretty sure when I read the introverted stuff that I fell in that category. After reading today’s list I know that I am 100% an introverted exerciser!!! I don’t even like it when my husband or kids walk in the room while I’m working out and feel the need to ask me something!!

  12. This is definitely not me – I do not like to talk while running, unless it’s an intentionally slow, short run or I’m with Sara…for some reason I like running and talking to her. I also don’t like when people in the gym attempt to interact with me. I’m an only child and I think it shows the most when I’m exercising.     • eric also uses the only child theory. i use the theory that i’m the oldest of 3 (and then i became the oldest of 7 when my mom married my step dad) and my excuse is that it was the only time to escape for a little peace and quiet :)

    I used to avoid the extroverts at the gym! I always felt like I didn’t have time to chat.
    But now that I work out at home, I feel like I need a pal to help motivate me so I guess I’m a middlevert.

    • im the same way- i would much rather go to a class than do a workout dvd at home. i like the energy from the class, without having to actually interact, if that makes sense.

  17. I love #3 :) I am definitely an introverted exerciser. I like to get into the zone and not talk to anyone. Plus, I never have enough air to actually talk to someone when I’m doing cardio. In real life, I think i’m a mix of both but I lean more towards extraverted.

  21. I am definitely an introverted exerciser and person in general. I mean, I will go to the gym with a friend but as soon as we enter those doors… Separation. Lol I just like to get my shit done and do it 100%, I guess! I tend to like more “me” time than time with other people, so I am definitely introverted in other aspects too! I do want to try looking for a running group for random days I feel like running with other people. Can’t knock it till you try it, right?

    • absolutely! i think its about balance, its not necessary to be totally on one side of the spectrum. sometimes its really fun to hang out with other people while working out!

  22. I just love all of this, you have just confirmed to me that I am a introverted exerciser to the MAX! SO funny!! I think working out in a basement by myself is BLISS and when people say they want to come to the gym with me I put on the fakest smile and change the subject really, really fast. YET, I am a Zumba instructor. Crazy. I know.

  24. so – I don NOT talk to people when on the treadmill or while I am running alone…but during a race – I will “find” a running buddy (aka. some stranger also running the race) and I force them to hang out and talk with me…but that is the only time I am an extrovert :)

  26. I used to think I was a combo of being introverted and extroverted when it comes to working out but by this list, I am definitely the former! Even if I have a running buddy, I prefer to keep conversation at a minimal…music is enough to get me pumped during! As for real life, I am more extroverted- I love being around people but at the same time, I need to have my “me time” to stay sane- probably explains why I love working out as much as I do ;)!

  31. #3 kills me. Hahahaha. So absurd. I think I’m a mixture of both. I can talk while running but don’t prefer it. Running with friends is motivating but so is running alone. Classes of people push me to keep going, although I don’t necessarily want to talk to them. But I really like killing it by myself with some weights, not exchanging any communication with anyone besides the occasional “don’t talk to me, I’m gettin’ it right now” glance. Ok, so this has nothing to do with introvert/extrovert. I’m just indecisive. So, my answer – I don’t know. HA.

  34. Introverted… do not talk to me while running or I will bite your head off.. okay well not really bite bc well that’d be impossible, but more than likely tell you to quiet it. I know horrible right? I just get in the zone, and would rather focus on me. While I was training for my first half, occasionally Joshua would run with me, and ah that boy…. He’d start singing inappropriate cadences out loud and try to get to me join in. Silly boy!
