So, for the most part, I go through life rather sleepy. Like, lets say the energy level of humans can be rated on a scale of Kristen Stewart to Richard Simmons:

human energy spectrum

My natural inclination is somewhere between Sleepy Dwarf and Jennifer Lawrence. Occasionally, I’ll have a Shiloh Jolie-Pitt moment, but those are rare. And I know I’m not the only person who feels this way (despite what my always-energetic mother tells me.) So that got me thinking- when am I actually, truly awake? I then had a whole text conversation with my friend Elyse about it, because obviously its impossible to have a clear thought without texting it out, and based on a population sample of everyone we know, we both think that most people can identify with the following list.

Top 8 Occasions You’re Surprisingly Not That Sleepy

8. You just had a large amount of sugar or caffeine. Because normal amounts of sugar and caffeine simply get you from “barely conscious” to “marginally functional”.

7. It’s 1am, on a weekday, and you have to wake up for work in 5 hours.

6. Something loud happened on the street as you walked by. Despite the fact it did not affect you in any way, your “fight or flight” response just kicked in like that of a gazelle near a lions den.

5.  Somebody just told you a really juicy piece of gossip. (If you’re like me, it perks up your senses like a meerkat perks up when it sees a snake.)

meerkat popping up

4. When commenting on an awesome blog post. Once again, if you’re like me, you enjoy reading about other people’s lives. And you REALLY enjoy when someone touches upon something that makes you be all “I KNOW” or “OMG I CAN’T EVEN” and then you get super excited in the comments and you just wish that you could gchat that person, because you have a lot to say and it would just be easier that way.

3. It’s 6am on a Saturday morning. Because of course.

2. You’re in the midst of a TV series marathon and you only have 2 episodes left. No matter what time it is, if you’ve spent the last couple days watching hours of Orange is the New Black, par example, there is no way you’re going to sleep once you hit the 2nd to last episode.

1. And as Elyse pointed out when I was then debating whether or not to exercise that day: the least tired she is all day is right after she works out. And that’s when I realized, me too.

Moral of the countdown- yay for exercise!

Where do you fall on the human energy spectrum??

When are you at your most awake?

Has anyone seen Orange is the New Black??

  1. Yay indeed for exercise! Nothing like a good ol sweat session to perk me up!
Last night after running 6.02 miles (cannot forget the .02) I felt so alive like I could go run 6 more!
And #4 – OH MY! I KNOW! I CAN’T EVEN begin to tell you how reading an awesome post (like this one) wakes me up!
Most of the time am full of coffee so Iam closer to the Shiloh Jolie-Pitt energy level – Yes I know – it’s annoying!
Hope you have a GREAT weekend!

  2. I love your human energy spectrum with the pic of K. Stewart! Classic! I wholeheartedly agree with #2 b/c I’m doing that with season 5 of Breaking Bad right now! I can also relate to #7 and #4 and of course #1!!! Great list!
Allie recently posted…10 THOUGHTS ON THEME PARKSMy Profile

    • ohh i NEED to do it with breaking bad. i watched enough episodes to get me acquainted with whats going on so i can watch the latest season, but i really need to go back and do a marathon of that show

  3. I’m actually one of those perpetually hyper people. Like right now? It’s 4:30 AM and I woke up completely ready to go and get my day started. But then come 10 PM and I’m completely dog tired. And #4… this happens to me all the time with your posts 😛

    Happy Friday, lovely lady!

  4. That is gold how Kristen stewart is on the sleepiest end of the scale- I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of her where she looks half awake! Number 1 is me to a T- I’m the most awake after exercise…after providing a mental list of excuses not to do it. I must echo Amanda and Shashi’s comments- seeing your posts pop up in my bloglovin makes me feel like harry when he met sally, or when harry killed voldemort or when harry par-tayed in vegas.

    • hahaha i always look forward to your comments because i know im in for a good chuckle :) and yeah i try to remember that post workout feeling to combat all the excuses i have not to do it.

  5. I don’t know how you write these posts – you are without question, one of the funniest people I’ve ever met (yes, I consider that in the virtual-blog-internet-world that our level of comment-interaction constitutes “meeting”).

I wish I had a dollar every time I was awake thinking that I have to be awake for work shortly. Gold.

    • ah all this virtual communication definitely counts as having “met” as well as “knowing” one another. ive made that decision. and i know- i always do that thing when i cant sleep thats like- “if i fall sleep right NOW i’d get 5 hours and 20 minutes…. if i fall asleep right NOW i’d get 5 hours and 4 minutes…” and so it goes :)

  6. You had me at your energy rating scale being measured from KStew to Richard Simmons. Brilliant. But then your meerkat GIF …and YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT READING A BLOG YOU CAN RELATE TO! <— I just felt less sleepy just writing that. Could you tell?

But here's the thing…after making me laugh you then made me think! That almost never happens!! After I exercise *is* the time when I feel the most awake and alert (and really good and grounded). Which makes me wonder why I have to fight with myself to do it on a daily basis. So now I'm having this light bulb-y moment and feel all inspired to exercise in addition to laughing.

How did you pull this brain jujitsu move on me? Well played, Charlotte. Well played. —Lisa

    • LOL! i always look forward to comments from you and Ashley because i end up laughing. and if i could remember that post workout feeling longer than the length of time it lasted i’d be in way better shape, thats for sure.

  7. Hilarious as per usual! I would say I average around a Jennifer Lawrence…unless I’ve had a few drinks. Then I’m Tom Cruise…including the whole jumping on couches deal 😉

  8. I love this!!! Your posts always leave me energized and HAPPY!!!
I’m probably right around Tom Cruise on the scale – some days closer to Richard Simmons and then I have occasional days where I am down by Sleepy!
And, I think exercise is truly the best cure for lots of things – part of why I rarely take a day completely off!
Kim recently posted…Friday Funnies Are Back!!My Profile

    • Oh i totally agree with you on exercise being a cure for most things! whenever my workout days are upped, everything tends to be better/ healthier/ my thoughts are clearer, etc

  9. So, I was just having this conversation with my mom this a.m. that I’m so tired (especially this week) because I can never sleep well. It’s soooo annoying! I’m just not a good sleeper! Exercise definitely helps with that.

  10. With my luck I am most awake on those nights where I have an earlier-than-usual start coming up! And I couldn’t agree more with your number 3..only difference is that is the case for me on Sundays i.e. the one day of the week where I am actually able to sleep in! Here’s hoping this week is an exception! Have a great weekend, girlie!

  11. hahaha love this. 1, 3, 4 and 5 are my favorites. but i love them all because … yes. i am always tired. like can’t even recall the last time i wasn’t tired? I’m not a good sleeper and it takes me years to fall asleep [not sure why, it’s not like I ever have anything really heavy going on in my brain, ha] so I attribute it to that.

  12. There are so many things I love about this post. Haha your humor kills me. AND YES – Orange is the New Black is amazing my friend. I watched the whole season in 3 days. I became obsessed. I’m pretty sure I’m at the Jolie-Pitt line… maybe Jenny Lawrence… depends on the day.
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green recently posted…Insta AugustMy Profile

    • how awesome is that show!? like you watch the first episode and you’re like “what did i just watch? that was insane but i have to watch one more” then after a few more you’re obsessed with every character’s storyline and its just great. also great is seeing such a strong female cast!

  13. number 11: when a small-but-cute creature in your household pulls a lamp off of a desk at 2 am. That was Tuesday night…needless to say, sleeping the rest of the night did not happen easily.
And I watched the first episode of Orange is the New Black last night! If I didn’t still have packing to do (bane of existence, currently) I probably would have watched like half the season, at least. Really like it so far!
And p.s. number 4: how I feel after reading your posts :-p

  14. You’ve jumped on the Orange is the New Black bandwagon, too? I feel so left out. :( But completely agree with #2…countless late nights have taken place because TV writers are too dang good at their jobs. The worst is when there’s a few seasons out, you watch the finale of one and tell yourself you’ll watch the rest later, and then the finale ends on a cliffhanger and you just HAVE to watch the first three episodes of the next season to figure out how everything gets resolved. Terrible, terrible screenwriters.

  15. I laughed out loud at the sleepy spectrum. Although I didn’t realize that Tom Cruise was so energetic! Usually in the morning I am like at a Tom Cruise level and by 1 pm I’m a JLaw. It’s like my life is backward or something.

  18. I am still working on Orange is the New Black, I think I’m at episode 8 or 9 right now. I guess I’d say I’m between J. law or Shiloh most of the time, although last night I took a melatonin for the first time and I am still feeling its effect this morning. Most people would say they need coffee, but what I think would really perk me up is some good sashimi….anyway…
Her Happy Balance recently posted…Friday Favorites! (8/30/13)My Profile

    • hahaha then you should get some good sashimi! yum!! ive never taken a melatonin because im afraid it would make me sleepy into the following day, and that would be all sorts of bad news for me.

  19. What! I just commented on Davida’s blog how I was contemplating if I should start Orange Is The Black and now you’re the third person I talked (read) to today that mentioned it.

I am about a Kristen Stewart from 7-10am then 1-4pm, a Jennifer Lawrence between those times and a Shiloh from 6pm-1 am. My internal body clock hates me.

    • oh you must watch it! the first episode is really in your face and you’re going to be like “what? what was that? what am i watching?!” but you’ll want to watch one more. then after a few more its the most addicting show.

  20. I definitely get overly excited when reading blog posts. I start getting all giddy and type ridiculously fast. I end up forgetting half of the things I even want to say and when I hit, “Post”, I get all Whomp, Whomp because I forgot some things. Lol. I’m definitely most energetic after my second cup of coffee! Around this time is my best time!

    • hahaha ahhh i do that too with the fast typing and then i forget half the things i wanted to say! then im always like “do i reply to my own comment to add more or…” hahaha glad im not the only one:) and im about to go get more coffee now :)

  21. I love the thermometer you made. Jennifer Lawrence is so awesome.

I know what you mean about getting excited over a blog post. I wish we could all just hang out together and talk each other’s ears off.

  24. UGH to being COMPLETELY awake at 6am on a Saturday and at 1am when I have to go to work the next morning. That is the story of my life, and it is ridiculously annoying.

Normally I fall somewhere between Jennifer and Shiloh, but for some reason, the second my head hits the arm of the couch and I turn on the TV to watch a good show, I’m down to Kristen Stewart and my eyes are rolling back in my head. Don’t know WHAT it is.

I have not seen “Orange is the new black” but you are the gazillionth person to mention it, and since I don’t want to be left out, I’m probably going to watch now.

I am definitely least awake the moment I get up – I just feel like a zombie and wonder why on earth I ever get up (even if it’s because I couldn’t sleep, but I somehow always forget that little fact…). But after some food or a run? I feel ready to conquer the world! 😉 Too bad that doesn’t always last all day…

  30. During math class or most any school class I’m in the negative zones. Seriously, during my physics class I had to hold my eyes open to read from my textbook. It was some bad stuff. BUT, when I wake up at 5:30 for cross country practice I am this Richard Simmons like ball of energy who annoys any person who remotely dislikes the mornings. After long runs, late nights, fun times, or scary moments I also get a tons of energy! Let’s just say I usually have TONS of energy except when I really need it! LOVE this post though! And coming from a person who regularly refers to herself as a “zombie”, I can totally relate to this post! The night shift is slowly sucking my will to live, so I seek out (and practically THRIVE on) those tiny moments during my day when I don’t feel like I’m going to faceplant into the nearest horizontal surface! Oh and I have insomnia…so that just makes me and XTRA-expert (like an X-men…I get to be Rogue by the way)! I was DEFINITELY most awake during my insomniac marathon of Orange is the New Black…I watched the entire season in ONE afternoon!
