So yesterday the Today Show teamed up with Fitness Magazine to do a segment called “How To Reorganize Your Kitchen to Help You Lose Weight”. They talked about putting produce and healthy things at eye level in the fridge, using white plates so you can better see how much food is in front of you, and always eating at the table so you’re mindful of what you’re putting in your mouth. Helpful stuff like that.

However, while those are all good tips, I question how much weight one can really lose by following this advice.

For surefire success, I think it might take a little more reorganizing. Luckily, I have some ideas.

Here are my top 8 ways to reorganize your kitchen to lose weight:

8. Place something large and heavy in front of your refrigerator. Something like a bookcase or a couch is ideal.

7. Repeat #8 at the entrance to your pantry.

6. Repeat once again at the entrance to your entire kitchen.

5. Throw out all the food in your cabinets, and replace with files, books and other inedible fare.

4. Put up artwork of gross things.

3. Replace your kitchen table with a treadmill.

2. Start using your oven for seasonal storage. Winter boots, coats, etc.

1. Remove all the light bulbs. If you cant see it, you cant eat it.

Is your kitchen organized according to healthy habits?

Do you keep junk food in the house?

Do you sit down to eat or do you usually snack/ munch/ grab and go? (I am very guilty of the latter)

What color are your plates?

  1. Hahaha! Oh my! Charlotte I have such a bellyache from laughing!!! #8, 7, 5 1 have convinced me I need to reorganize my kitchen indeed – even though am not trying to loose weight!!!! baaah!
Thanks so much for the morning laugh!

  2. I kind of think the Today Show and Fitness Magazine’s tips wouldn’t work well for weight loss; they seem like a load of rubbish to me!
Now your ideas would work! My sister and I actually used to put photos of fit women from magazines (you know…very realistic images!) on our junk cupboards door!
Now, I just don’t buy junk if I don’t want to eat it!
Abby @ Change of Pace recently posted…Active recovery plansMy Profile

    • ohh i did that too with the photos!! i dont remember it ever really working though… maybe it would keep me out for like 5 minutes but then id just eat the junk food, look at the photos and wonder if those models missed whatever junk food i was eating :)

  3. What great tips, just what I needed! I think we need a number 9 there NOT to hide the kitchen knives so we can stab our eyes out at the end.

I generally sit down to meals, but distraction free… thats another topic. As evidenced by me commenting whilst eating dinner. Off a white plate nonetheless so I must be doing something right?
Arman @ thebigmansworld recently posted…Mum’s cheddar scones- lightened upMy Profile

    • hahaha yes we should add that #9 ! :) and oh me too- have you ever eaten something while distracted and dont even remember that you ate it?? that happens to me with bananas sometimes. like when i take a break from the computer for a second im be all “wheres my banana” then i see the peel in the trash and realize i must have eaten it…

  4. LOL – It’s bulletproof! I’m trying this tomorrow, it’s time to stash away all my winter attire anyway 😉

In fact who needs a kitchen? If it can’t be served in gigantic 7-11 double gulp cup that can easily be transported in your car, why bother?

PS Thank you for including the Clueless reference. Without even the quote to say anything, it still said everything.

  5. Hahahaha Charlotte, you are hysterical. Key to my world is just have no junk food in the house. That way when I have a craving for cookies it needs to be cured with a fage and fresh fruit! (My plates are white)

    • so smart!! i tend not to keep junk food in the house, although not entirely on purpose- if i ever bring home a thing of cookies or chips from the store, i polish them off before i know it :)

  6. Hahahaha yes. Just yes. I really hate those articles and segments. I think your tips are way better 😉

  8. I think their advice could be useful…but let’s be honest, when you want a cookie, you’re sure as heck going to find that cookie, regardless of it’s at eye level or not. I’ve also heard that you’re supposed to photograph food on white plates because colored plates (I think blue specifically?) suppresses the appetite and therefore makes it unappealing…or something like that.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles recently posted…Running for Life, Not a Race: Focusing on the Big PictureMy Profile

    • right!! amanda touched upon that in the comments too- that blue plates were supposed to suppress the appetite, and now its all about the white plates… personally ive never been hungry, taken one look at a delicious pile of food on a blue plate and suddenly lost the desire to eat. not once :)

  9. I don’t think I need to tell you how hilarious this post is! I’m more focused on the fact that you’re the only other person (besides my Mom) who also watches the Today Show….It’s the on show I actually have time to watch these days nor am I willing to give it up! Did I mention I’m a grandmother?

    • hahaha oh i know! i’ve watched it since high school (maybe even middle school? when did it come on the air?) regardless i watch it whenever im home in the mornings. i cant give it up!

  10. Oh its white plates now? Last I read it was blue plates, because blue is apparently supposed to reduce our appetite… what a load of shiitake mushrooms. They should just start building blue houses without kitchens. Problem solved 😉

  11. If you don’t have any extra ‘heavy things’ to put in front of the fridge you could try cutting a hole in the floor right in front of it! It is amazing what people will think of to avoid the simple habit of eating healthier.

  12. Haha! All very effective tips! Honestly, if I have chocolate in the fridge and it is buried behind 50 things, I still know it is there and will dig it out come hell or high water!

  15. Another good weight loss tip:

Unleash mice and rats in your own kitchen. They’ll eat your food AND make you feel disgusted. Win-win!

  16. Haha I love this! I don’t know if the lightbulb one would work for me though, If i’m hungry, i’m making my way to food even if it requires an injury in the process :-p I don’t keep a ton of junk food in the house, but I always have chocolate in some form…and usually ice cream/frozen yogurt.
And about 98% of my meals are eaten on the go, in front of my computer, or in front of the TV. I’m kind of terrible.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles recently posted…Live Blogging: From Blog To Job.My Profile

    • same! i eat soo many of my meals in front of the computer, and its true, i dont always realize how much im eating when im distracted. i usually pick up a little dark chocolate from the store, but it never lasts long :)

  17. Haha too funny! I try to put the junk stuff on a high shelf so I forget about it, which sometimes works (sometimes doesn’t). I have white plates and blue plates. I never knew plate color could have real impact….
Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food recently posted…Staying Healthy On The RoadMy Profile

    • yeah i’d really like to see the science behind the “plate color” theory… im very skeptical :) and yeah i try to hide some junk out of sight, but i still know its there, beckoning me to come get it out of hiding and eat it :)

  18. hahaha…I think all your ideas would definitely get the job done! 😉 We don’t keep junk food in the house….too much temptation! My husband and I make a conscious effort to sit down and eat every night. I usually make several different meals over the weekend to cover us for dinner during the week.

  22. I used to be awful about eating in front of the TV and thus mindlessly eating. But I’ve gotten much better over the years and now I sit down and eat mostly :) Plates are actually white but that’s because they’re Correl (sp?) and they’re cheap and never break :) Love your posts!

    • yeah ive gotten better about eating in front of the TV, but i do eat in front of the computer, which for me is even more dangerous. i sometimes eat bananas and not realize it, until i see the peel in the trash and just realize i must have :)

  23. STOP…. I am laughing so hard right now! And I’m guilty of munching/grab & go. I usually munch on carrots but if things like popcorn (!!!!) are around, there’s no stopping me!

  26. Funny as usual Charlotte, hilarious.. I have a better idea, why not throw the fridge, take the cabinets out and make it an extension of the living room….we would be too lazy to go out to buy food…
I munch, grab food on the go and eat in between:)

  27. Why not rip up your kitchen floor, put in soil, and grow your own magical garden full of healthy fruits and veggies?

  28. Hahaha. I like your tips much better then the ones they listed. Obviously.
I really don’t think there’s much point to doing those “little” tricks to lose weight…like using a white plate would really make a difference in weight loss.
My favorite would be putting heavy items in your fridge like a couch. I mean, duh it just makes sense.
    Lisa recently posted…Morning CravingsMy Profile

    • thats exactly my point- while i do think those little tips can be useful, but i dont think they’re really leading anyone to lose weight. what happened to good ol’ eating right and exercising to lose weight?

  29. My plates are a mix n match of different ones from over the years, but my BOWLS are 100% pink! I’m hoping to get rid of the old plates soon and bring in some nice new ones. I have a nice set in mind!

Yep – we have junk/snack food – we try to eat healthy most of the time but I like potato chips and I keep plenty of snacks around for the boys.
