Hello!

This post is coming to you from my bed where I am nursing a bit of a back injury. You see, whilst moving heavy boxes the other day I somehow managed to pinch a nerve near my spine… which means it hurts when I walk and my left hand is expected to be numb for the next few days.

Ugh, I know.

Like, you know when a house is mis-wired and you turn on a light switch in the kitchen and the upstairs toilet flushes? It’s like that. Or at least that’s how I picture it in my mind :)

So as I said, when you pinch this particular nerve in your back, your left hand goes numb. I have therefore been terribly clumsy lately. I have knocked over everything that has had the unfortunate fate of being on my left including- but not limited to- water, coffee, more water, etc. In fact I have just covered my entire studio in a layer of paper towels in anticipation of the next spill.

So in case you one day find yourself in a similar situation, behold my official guide to dealing with a pinched nerve:

Step 1: Even though it doesn’t help, shaking your left hand furiously with a limp wrist feels like it helps, so, do a lot of that. Sing Florence & The Machine’s hit tune “Shake It Out” simultaneously.

Step 2: Watch lots of HGTV and learn what light fixtures to put in your extreme eco-friendly tree house that is made purely from indigenous wood and suspends itself in mid-air over a waterfall. Because ‘natch.

Step 3: Watch lots of Food Network. Learn what to- actually, just get really hungry. Order thai food.

Step 4: Spill said thai food. (Because you reached for your phone too fast when a new snapchat came in.)

Step 5: Congratulate yourself on having that layer of paper towels that caught the spill before any real damage was done to your comforter.

So remember kids, bend at the knees and no twisting while you’re lifting. No back protection is whack protection!

    Now, be honest. You hurt your back moving furniture in front of your fridge didn’t you? Totally joking! I know you don’t even have a kitchen anymore, it’s your new home office.

    But seriously, rest up and I hope that the pain/numbness dissipates soon :( It’s a real bummer being injured, but resting up and having a few lazy days can be a bit of a reward :) Who doesn’t love lazy-bed-Thai? (Guilty)

  2. Sending you some positive vibes buddy! I have suffered from a sore back before thanks to pulling some muscle at the gym, but when I was moving furniture into my place, I asked my mates to help me out…. and by help me out I mean I directed them and they did all the manual labour. wow, could not have sounded any more masculine then.

    Best thing to order in- with you on the Thai front- extra hot and sour soup please!

    3. I injured my back twice and each time was pretty much the absolute worst injury I had except for being pregnant with twins…which really isn’t an injury, it’s actually much worse.

    So very sorry to hear about your injury! Back injuries are no fun – I hurt mine while incorrectly carrying a litle munchkin for way too long, then got a stomach “injury” by overdosing on ibuprofin!
    Rest is best…
    HGTV and Foodnetwork are my favs! And it would have to be pizza..pizza is what I would order in – with pineapple :)

  9. Back injuries are the worst because it is impossible to get comfortable and simple things like coughing hurt!!!
    I hope that you feel much better soon and that all feeling returns to your hand. Reality TV is my favorite recovery watching stuff – ANTM, Project Runway, all the competition shows on Food Network, Dance Moms……

At least you have an excuse to be clumsy…yesterday in lab I spilled a bunch of our product on our table (my partner wasn’t thrilled) and I had nothing to blame it on because I’m just a huge klutz naturally. If I did pinch a nerve, though, I think it’d be better if it affected my right hand…I eat and write with my left. 😉 I hope you’re back to your non-pinched-not-clumsy self soon! :)

  15. I’ve never had a back injury, but I pinched a nerve in my arm which made my ring finger go numb for a while. It was really awkward. I’m sorry to hear you’re stuck up in bed but I heard trashy reality television is a cure all. 😉

    My favorite food to order in is probably pizza! Delicio-so!

  16. Aw, I love you. Everyone gets inspired when they watch the Food Network. I get incredibly hungry and bang my keyboard until I find the right place to deliver to me.

    I work part time at a Chiropractor’s office so I see people with pinched nerves all the time, so sorry. They suck big time. Luckily I never had one but I do have some gnarly shin splints.

    • ouch! sorry about your shin splints!! and ok so you get it- ive had this once before and my chiropractor did a few adjustments, but basically said there’s no quick fix it just takes a couple days of rest and light movement.

  17. Ahhhh back injuries are the worst! Sorry to hear about yours. Hope it gets better! I know what it’s like being stuck in bed for an extended period of time, I was in the hospital a couple weeks ago with a kidney infection. No fun at all! Listen lady, no more moving heavy boxes for you. :) My prescription is to watch some Dr. Oz and Real Housewives and call me in the morning if you feel any worse! 😉 Feel better soon!

  20. oooh that sucks big-time! Hope you feel better soon. I’m super lucky (knock on wood) that I’ve never had any major injuries. If I’m sick in bed, though, I do watch a lot of House Hunters International and live out my fantasies of owning a house in the Caribbean. That or Law and Order: SVU marathons, where I live out my fantasy of being a bad-ass detective.

    • hahaha of course!! im really not sure who those shows are really aimed at, but i personally feel its best to be prepared for all circumstances, and what if i have a futuristic tree house one day?? its not going to decorate itself :)

  22. Oh no, feel better and fast! This isn’t anything like what you’re dealing with, but occasionally I sleep with my body in such odd positions that an entire leg will go numb and when I get out of bed to use the bathroom or whatever I’ll step out of bed and just fall to the floor because that leg is completely useless. It’s actually really funny in a sleep-deprived, groggy, hate your life kind of way.

    • oh ive done that!! but actually its more like a cramp in my leg wakes me up and it hurts sooo much to move it and shake it out. so, i guess not the same but similar! yours sounds way funnier :)

    How can one crack jokes and make people fall of the bed when in crappy pain, only you can…
    I know how bad it can be…I have to be very very cautious, carry stuff bending your knees, don’t stretch like crazy, and for me no lifting my 7 year old to hug him..I remember those 5 days..owwww..not fun.

    • ohh ouch- so you understand!! nothing can knock you out of life for a bit like a back injury- and they’re so easy to get! i really need to be more mindful of bending at my knees and having better form. its just not worth the accidents!

  29. Out for 7 weeks from a back injury a few months ago…I just got high off prescription pain meds (since they were actually prescribed to me it felt warranted) and watched a lot of reality TV! My suggestion would be to overwhelm yourself with re-runs of the real world, KUWTK and The West Wing (for a bit of substance). Good luck to ya!

  30. that sucks! i really hope it gets better soon.

    i threw out my back (and neck) a few times from workouts and the one time my back went out and i was on robaxacet for 2wks (<–which was actually pretty awesome because when you're on muscle relaxants, you seriously don't give a f*ck about anything) and NOTHING helped.

    i went to my doctor who wanted to prescribe me with even stronger muscle relaxants and while the old party raver in me was clawing at that script, i decided to call my acupuncturist who did a session on me with cupping, then booked me for a 60min massage the next day and then after that, I WAS 100% completely HEALED. but maybe i should've also taken the meds LOL.

    food for thought (about acupuncture, not the meds).

    • hahaha this comment is epic :) yeah i dont think my case warrants an Rx, but acupuncture sounds intriguing! ive been interested in that for a while, i suppose now is as good a time as any to give it a go! thanks for the suggestion!

  33. OH NO!! I’m so sorry to hear about your back, Charlotte…but I’m glad you are being smart about resting it! Trashy TV, bed & take-out sounds like the perfect remedy!     Had a few myself back in the day….no pun intended.
    Lived in Japan for awhile, futon on tatami, issue solved.
    But more prone to pinched nerves.

    Incidentally, Japan..not the land of discipline that people imagine.

  36. My dad has a pinched nerve on his back because of shoulder surgery gone wrong. If you press a certain part of his back, his arm starts moving uncontrollably. It’s really hilarious and fun to joke around with, but back injuries really suck! Love your guide! I’ll have to refer my dad to it!
