So, this past week I’ve been working from home. Working on what, you ask, since it obviously wasn’t the blog? Ha ha ha oh you. Touché.

I’ve been working on getting a new job. However, this past week I’ve also been watching a lot of daytime TV. Well, to be clear, I wasn’t actually “watching it” watching it, I’m just a big fan of background noise…

And yes, okay fine- sometimes background noise becomes frontground noise and I end up giving an episode of Frasier my undivided attention.

It happens.

In any case, if you’re ever home for a week, I’m going to break down the channels for you, because the tv guide that pops up on your television doesn’t really do them justice.

Here you go:

Food Network: Lots and lots of shows that make you hungry.

Travel Channel: Food Network on the road.

History Channel: Aliens! Conspiracies! Everything you know is wrong! And also a whole bunch of pawn shows. (Are you looking to sell your civil war bayonet? I think I’m now qualified to give you an estimate.)

E!: Kardashians. That’s pretty much it.

HGTV: Dedicated to proving that ugly wall color CAN be changed, much to the amazement and delight of first-time homebuyers everywhere.

Bravo: Dysfunction at its finest.

Comedy Central: Dysfunction at its funniest.

CNBC: People yelling at you about business. (I can’t watch for more than a few minutes without thinking I should be getting paid for it.)

Everything else: Infomercials.

So, there you go. Don’t ever say this blog didn’t teach you anything.

How have you been this last week? Fill me in! I’ve missed you!

Do you work from home? Are you a fan of background noise?

What do you do for a living? Is it fun?

(Are you or anyone you know hiring?)

  1. I cannot tell ya how many times “background noise” has become “front ground noise” for me too!!! LOL!
At the beginning of every year one of my resolutions is to watch more TV and every year I fail miserably and feel I am so missing out when I hear talk round the office – but now – thanks to your TV Guide, I know better 😉
Seriously, sorry to hear bout your job situation Charlotte :(
I am a graphic designer – wish I worked from home, but not yet…never know what the future holds though. I see a lot of ads for jobs in sales and marketing http://jobs.yp.com/ – Good luck lady!

    • ooohh thanks for the link! and you have a very cool job! that sounds awesome!! and i go through phases with tv- sometimes i have no idea what people are talking about either, other times im leading the conversation :)

  2. Perfect summary of Life as well as channels!

  3. Yep – that about sums it up. I’m not a fan of background noise. If I’m home alone (never!) the tv is off and I also try to not turn it on until later in the night when the hubs and I watch our shows. Maybe you should do this weekly so I can just catch-up here?

  4. “Travel Channel: Food Network on the road” – I had to compose myself after reading that. It is SO true!

Yes I am thinking of selling that bayonet thank you. I hope you’re able to give me a price, and I’ll give you either:

A shattered look because it is so much lower than what I was hoping to sell it for (because my emotional attachment made me over value it)

A look of utter astonishment, because I found this piece of junk in the attic … and you’re telling me it’s worth over five grand?

  5. Love your description of HGTV! Perfect! I’ve been working from a home office for 8 years now, and sometimes a little background noise is the only thing that keeps me sane! I love to stream music on Pandora while I work. I’ve also been known to watch an episode of What Not to Wear during lunch. TLC – The Learning Channel? I think not. I’ve lost some serious brain cells on this channel!

    • lol i know!! do you remember a show called “a baby story”? (maybe its still on?) it was on TLC back when we were in college (maybe even high school?) it was like reality tv in its early stages. i definitly learned a lot from that show :)

  6. I have always been fan of background noise! Back in my college and med school days, I always studied with the tv on or the radio. I just need it. I cannot function well in silence. It throws me off track. Annoying!
Isn’t it great how the simplest things cause people to fall over in frustration and disgust on infomercials?! I could watch people dramatically failing at the easiest tasks on infomercials for hours. Bwahahahahahahaha!

    • hahahaha me too! i have to admit if im having a bad day i just google “infomercials gif” and i instantly start laughing. that over the top acting at the simplest tasks is the funniest thing

  7. So accurate. My favorite is food network. And HGTV. And a little bravo here and there. Actually, I don’t really watch TV. It’s all dysfunctional if you ask me!

We actually cancelled our tv service so I never watch (we still subscribe to netflix)!

  9. not a background noise kinda person; but my husband is. i haven’t watched anything on the food network or HGTV in YEARS!

i work from home sometimes when i don’t feel like dealing with traffic or i’m really busy; it’s easier for me to get stuff done when people aren’t always coming up demanding shit from me. i’m an IT consultant and i love it :)

I don’t work from home, but when I’m home by myself, I always have the TV on. I guess I just need that background noise. I hate when it’s super quiet, unless I’m trying to go to sleep.

  14. That’s pretty much accurate! I tend to dislike background noise if I really have to focus on something, but if I’m just doing thoughtless homework or busywork I really like background noise.

And being a grad student means that I do work from home most days of the week. Annnnd I absolutely love it. No cable though, so music has to suffice as my background noise!

  17. Haha I love HGTV, but I can’t handle it during the day. They save all the good shows for night time. Unless you wake up early and watch “For Rent.” That’s my favorite.

GOOD LUCK with the job hunt! I searched for the kind of job that I have now for two years (while working another job), but I am so happy that I found it!

  18. I do a lot of work from home and can’t do the TV background noise thing — way too distracting. I listen to Coffitivity, which is like subtle coffee shop background noise… I kind of love it, and by kind of I mean it’s basically on whenever I’m trying to get anything done.
Amanda @ .running with spoons. recently posted…. monthly favorites – september 2013 .My Profile

    • I’m going to have to try Coffitivity!! it sounds so soothing! coffee shops sometimes make me nervous just with all the people around, the wifi being spotty, me thinking people are trying to look at my screen, etc- but i love that noise! this is a brilliant idea.

  19. Glad you’re back! And finding work is definitely tough. I always say finding a job is a job.
Haha oh yes, this sums it up about perfect.
I work from home sometimes and I seriously can not work with ANY noise – it’s kind of bad. So I just have to deal with no noise whatsoever. So boring.
Lisa recently posted…Currently – SeptemberMy Profile

    • yeah some people cant stand noise in the background! i think it all depends on whether you tune it out or tune in to it. that would actually make an interesting psychology project! and yes- finding a job is literally a full time job!

  20. Oh yay! You’re back! What is the career change?! I love working from home. I can actually be quite productive. I do like some background noise depending upon what I am doing. Love HGTV, Food Network and Bravo!

  21. I work in cancer research, and not it is not fun haha, but luckily my coworkers are! Job hunting is always a bit stressful but exciting at the same time. I’m always amazed at the jobs you can apply to with a college major that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the job. Also, soap operas. From 1pm-3pm the low channels (ABC, NBC, etc.) play nothing but those. Ugh!

  24. I seem to work better with background noise. I always got most of my work done in the Starbucks at my college because the silence made me sleepy in the library. Plus, you can take breaks without having to get out of your seat. Win, win.

And you just need to watch Kelly and Michael in the morning because it wins over everything.

And Who Wants to be a Millionaire will make you feel like an idiot.

I always have garbage on in the background while I’m on the computer or reading a magazine, etc. I don’t think it’s the background noise that I like, I think it’s my mindset that I can multitask and get all of my leisure activity in at once. Ha, yeah, that never works.

I love your definition of the Travel Channel- so funny and so true!

Do you ever feel like you are super hungry after watching Food network. I can’t tell you how many craving I get after that..so I’ve controlled myself from watching that channel. Now to E…seriously depresses me at times and makes me very happy at times..
Something I never tire of watching is LUCY’s show, infact watched a lot of it last week.
Glad I get to work from home….then again it doesn’t pay a lot:)..Love what I do though, freelancing, food photography and writing for local magazines>>

And E! is totally only the Kardashians. I genuinely don’t know any other shows on it! (Well maybe I do, but not many are well known!)

I do not work for home…I used to work from home and it’s harder than it sounds because of all of the distractions. HOWEVER, now that I don’t work from home I find myself missing it sometimes. Funny the way that works.

I remember when I was in America I thought the Kardashians had their own channel- (E)- it was ALWAYS on. Serioously, I’d turn on the TV while getting ready and Kris Jenner would be lecturing me.

I’m fortunate to be able to work from home, and sometimes when its not too busy I LOVE background noise- however if its something important or I need to use my brain, it has to be off.

Hope the job hunt goes well- pitch those sock pockets!

  31. Per usual, you have my laughing hard at your wonderful posts. I hate the Food channel because it makes me feel two things:
    1. My disgust at myself for not being able to cook properly
    2. My complete desire to eat everything on TV and then some
So it’s not really a healthy situation, mentally or physically. HA!

  34. Oh my gosh I’m all about the background noise! I don’t know why but I can’t get any work done in silence. The tv thing is an issue though because right now I don’t have cable so my choices are limited to People’s Court, Days of Our Lives, and Today with Kathy Lee and Hoda. At least “The Chew” is on at noon!

  35. This post kind of sort of made me sad.. not your fault, but the governments. You see out here in Kuwait we have an AFN Box (armed forces network) & now since the government is on shut down we have nothing to watchhhhhh!!!! BOOOOO

…thankfully I had downloaded the new seasons of HIMYM, Sons of Anarchy & Scandal though. Phew!!

  36. I don’t have cable (just Netflix!) so I don’t really use it as background noise. If I DID I would probably have reruns of Man vs Food and Bar Rescue on at all times.

I work as a Marketing Project Manager \overseeing new flyer/email/web design projects for my company. The work is seasonal, so there are definitely slow periods when it’s not as fun but being involved in the creative design processes is great! I don’t think I would be able to focus enough if I worked from home. Too many distractions between the couch, pup and errands!

Good luck in your job search!

  37. Yeah, I’d say that about sums it up! I haven’t had cable in years, but I do admit to being a bit of a Netflix addict at times! New Girl season TWO! Woot WOOT! Yes, I am fully aware that season three is now on tv. I’m already trying to forget the spoiler I saw on the internet the other day…damn them!!

I’m weird, I can’t have any background noise if I have to concentrate…no tv, no music, just complete boring silence…I blame it on my self-diagnosed ADD!

I only WISH I could do my job from home, but I think it would be a little difficult to set up a CAT scan machine in the middle of my living room…not to mention that it would clash with my decor! 😉
