A while back, I did a post on beauty and body image throughout the years. I’m doing something similar today, this time with an Emmys twist. What constitutes healthy body image and style for women (and men!) has changed some in the last 60 years.

Let’s take a look at 6 decades of power couples at the Emmys and think out loud together!

Note: the photos are real, the captions are completely made up.

Unbeknownst to the public, I Love Lucy was actually filmed in color. Desi and Lucy simply enjoyed dressing in greyscale.

David Duchovny felt slightly uncomfortable when he realized his publicist told him to get dressed for "his debut as Sci-Fi's golden boy at the Emmy's," and not, as he thought she said, "a daring Siegfried and Roy theme party at Steve Buscemi's."

David Duchovny vowed to never again play the old game, Telephone, after the original message to “dress for your debut as Sci-Fi’s golden boy at the Emmy’s” was delivered as “dress for a bbq like Siegfried and Roy at Steve Buscemi’s.”

Thanks for hosting, Amanda! (I’d also like to highlight her post from yesterday which is the best thing I’ve read on blogging in a while.)

And if you want to see an even cooler montage that actually moves, go here.

So, if you could go back in time and visit any era, which would it be?

Which decade’s style to you like the best?

Do you watch awards shows? (Did you watch the Emmys on Monday?)

Did you ever play the game Telephone?

43 Thoughts on “Hollywood Style and Body Image Through the Years

  1. Love the caption for David D!!!! What the hell was he thinking? I’m so not the one to go to for fashion but the 60s was definitely a very cool era for straight-up style!! So elegant. I honestly tried watching the Emmys but I didn’t make past 20 minutes of so. :-)

  2. Telephone was the best game, especially when you purposely changed it….ooops.

Not sure which decade would suit me best, for a second, I thought Camilla was a max statue of Kim K.

  3. probably the early 2000s. that’s when brad pitt was at his hottest. i had no idea the emmys were on; same goes for VMAs. and why were the emmy’s on a monday? isn’t it usually on sunday?

  4. LOLLLL the 1960s caption–love it. I used to be forced to play telephone when I was in Girl Scouts. Granted, I was 9 but… I thought it was silly even back then.

  5. hahaha the 1990’s picture is awesome! I haven’t watched an awards show in a while…I used to watch all of them when I was younger though.

    • yeah i had it on in the background this year but wasnt paying attn, which is far cry from a handful of years ago when my friends and i were having awards show viewing parties :)

  6. Loved going back in time, put a smile on my face with a side of giggles!

  7. Hey – what’s wrong with grayscale dressing? or even black and white dressing???
I have such a boring wardrobe – my coworkers challenged me to come into work in something red today – I dug deep into my closet and think the back of it was like the one in Narnia as I managed to pull out this red number that is so faded it looks like its from the 50s – but it is red – or a shade of it anyway!! :)

  8. Maybe because they’re not popular over here but I’ve never watched any of those award shows – and therefore missed out on dress/ weird picture gossiping. Pity!
As for best decade I’ll go with 2000s and hide my disbelief that it’s really been -that- long ago already. Geeez, I’m getting old! But Brad Pitt’s still looking good.

  11. I’m the worst when it comes to award shows- I hardly ever watch them so I just look up the list of winners online the next day and read the “worst dressed” articles.

  12. Someone was playing a sick joke on me when they made sure I was born in the LAST year of the 80s. I was born to sport 80s hair and I only got 4 measly months out of it. A grudge I still hold…clearly.

    I don’t know if I have a favorite decades style – I love Connie Sellica’s blue dress!!
I never watch the awards shows – I don’t pay enough attention to the current shows, music, movies…..to know what is going on anyway.

  16. Haha! Love all the captions, especially the “x-ray vision” one! :) I have always wished I could travel back in time… maybe to see the 1940’s-50’s. It would be so interesting to see how different life was then!

  17. OMG the xray vision had me DYING! What a fun post. I think I would like to live in the 20’s or 50’s. Although I’m super crunchy granola at times so maybe the 70’s?

  19. Hahaha these captions are hilarious! I love how confident the women seem to get over the years. I’d like to go back to the 50s and see what it was really like – I feel like we all have this Mad Men idea of how everyday life was and I just don’t buy that it was that black and white (no pun intended)

  21. I gotta go sixties so I can channel my inner hippie, although I suspect I’m the first anal retentive hippie. It’s a fascinating combination.

Cher’s make up has come a long way. Or maybe not.
