I recently noticed some interesting conversations about healthy morning routines going on at ALOHA, so I thought I’d join.

Without further ado, here’s my routine. A-five, six… a-five, six, seven, eight!

5:00 AM: Alarm goes off. I wake up looking and feeling fantastic.

sleepy

5:05 AM: I leap out of bed, needing only but a couple deep breaths of fresh oxygen to wake me up fully.

coffee 1

5:something AM:  (A few more deep breaths)

all the coffee

Still-not-quite-6 AM: I then slip into my Bar Method clothes…

winter 1

6:00 AM: … And prance on over to the studio where I begin class full of energy and awesomeness.

bar method 2

bar method 3

Over the course of the next hour, a transformation occurs. I go from grumpy beast to happy human. Light radiates from my fingertips accordingly.

Transformation-beauty-and-the-beast

7:00 AM: I leave class feeling stronger, happier and less sarcastic*.

happy

(*That last one is debatable.)

Sometime after 7:00 AM: I return home for more nourishing recipes. While for most people this means a protein-packed smoothie or food you can actually chew, I simply prefer more caffeine and/or chocolate at this point in my day, like this cup of liquid witchcraft:

Superfood Hot Chocolate

Superfood Hot Chocolate: it’s healthy and chocolatey at the same time…

Why yes, ALOHA, your magic is welcome here.

8:14 AM: Realizing it’s 14 minutes later than I thought, I peel myself away from the Today show, frantically throw snacks into my purse and make myself presentable(ish) with a vim that was severely lacking an hour earlier.

8:16(ish) AM: Leave for work feeling good!

happy 2

Moral: While we all like to think the perfect morning routine involves beautifully dawning sunlight, 72 degree weather, an ocean view and some outdoor exercise, that’s simply not reality when you live beyond the wall in the Northeast in wintertime. (Note to self: relocate, Charlotte.)  Maintaining a happy outlook and healthy habits takes work and, quite frankly, delicious things.

Disclaimer: As you all probably know, I accept brand incentives in the following forms:

  1. Money
  2. Power
  3. Merchandise that’s made of chocolate, caffeine and/or alcohol
  4. Compliments

ALOHA gave me none of the above.

Questions:

What’s your morning routine?

Are you a breakfast person? (Once I get to my desk, I eat every hour on the hour til lunch)

If your routine is thrown off, does it affect the rest of your day? (YES!)

  2. Aloha! I’m so happy to see you back here…and now I know you’ve been too busy with Barre and being gorgeous to write. You live a charmed life my friend. And, what’s not to love about literally being buried under snow and thinking your roof may collapse any day now? Pffff
Allie recently posted…My Place In The Pace: Meet the EliteMy Profile

    • Aloha!! I’m back — the funny thing is I kept writing, I just wasn’t posting #dumb. And ok I’m glad im not the only one who thinks about roof collapses– this snow is scary! Not that it bothers you, as you continue running outside!!

  3. My morning routine usually involves a 5 AM workout, and it always includes breakfast. If I haven’t eaten by 8:30 I’m a nightmare to be around. so I usually have some scrambled eggs and toast before I leave for work.

    • Scrambled eggs sound so good right now. Now I want to order from the diner downstairs, even though I just had oatmeal. I’ll give it like 15 mins, then call :)

  4. I love a day in the life posts :) Thanks for sharing your humor.

  5. a) I have that mug. My only gripe about it is that you can’t microwave it le sigh
    b) I don’t get my morning workout right now because of that idiot thing that I did this weekend where I ran really far
    c) I also look like an eskimo
    d) I’m waiting for the part of your day where sex factors in because you know that contributes to the whole happiness thing.

    • d) HAHA omg you made me spit my coffee out with this one. Great call – now i know what to write about for a follow up post
      c) I’m so glad I’m not the only one – i now feel naked if i go outside not wearing 100 layers
      b) That whole running really far thing is never a bad thing

i love this and you are sooooo adorable. MISS YOU!!

when i worked, i woke up at 5 to work out; then headed off to work and fought traffic, raging all the way.

now that i’m fucking off from work, i get up at a decent hour (not true – still wake at 5 but lounge in bed till 630) but at least no more traffic BS!!

    • You are amazing and I miss you and your blog!! Your time off sounds like it’s going awesomely!! And ain’t it the truth — 5am is not so bad when you don’t HAVE to get up.

  7. My morning routine usually involves waking up way earlier than I need to, beelining to the kitchen to make my favourite mug of black tea, and then plopping down in front of the computer to start work. I wish I was better at meditating, yoga-ing, or exercising in the morning, but the truth is that unless I get some of those work to-dos knocked off my list early, I can’t relax!

    • My fellow early bird!! :) (Although I believe you have me beat) I know that can’t relax til work is completed feeling — if I open my computer first thing in the morning, I probably won’t make it to my workout. It’s like an ignorance is bliss thing for me i think :)

  8. Ha! Well now that my son wakes up every two hours between 1am and 7am, I just have coffee. Lots and lots and lots of coffee. I then try to stay awake for the rest of the day until I can go to bed.

  9. I learned today that I am a huge fan of whichcraft! YAASSS – Chocolate and coffee are musts (for me) no matter where I live – but, I gotta say, I’m impressed it takes you just a few breaths of O2 to get you at the gym in the morn – I need a few breaths of 3 “cups” to get me on my treadmill – which is located a short skip and jump away in my living room!

    ALOHA YOU BETTER TAKE NOTE.

Going to whatsapp you now regardless of your woken state.

    • I sleep like the dead, a little “ding!” can’t wake me up anyways :) Besides, even if it did I’d be so freaking psyched — you’re one of the few ppl allowed to wake me up! :)

  13. I like your style. I have no routine, well I do kind of. I want one, but I work odddddd fackin hours. If I’m not working a morning shift (4 or 5 am) then my routine is rise around 6, coffee my soul, blog read, workout, blog read, and so on. Mornings are my favorite.

  14. YAYYYY you’re back! Sounds like you have a sweet little very early morning routine.

PS – Move to Southern California and that last paragraph is a reality! :)

  15. And this is why I missed your posts. Simply put, they make me laugh from the foggy morning face straight down to the disclaimer.

My morning routine means waking up ridiculously early at 5 a.m.. Also just like you, I chug coffee but I work on my blog posts as opposed to getting to the gym. I suppose the latter might be better for my overall daily mojo but I am not cognizant in the evenings so the morning is my only opportunity.

  16. Um, I say this as delicately as possible: I’M SO F*CKING GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK IN THE BLOGOSPHERE! I missed your writing like woah, and this post (per the usual) made me laugh so hard I basically cackled. I’m always amazed by the morning routines that uber-healthy people talk about, because my morning workouts are fueled by caffeine and caffeine alone. Well, that and unicorn tears. But mainly caffeine.

    • Don’t underestimate the power of those unicorn tears! I would have include a photo of me using mine, but you know, legal reasons and whatnot.

Related: I need to go to starbucks now (again)

  17. Whew you get a lot done in such a short amount of time…and that early! That’s some serious motivation. While it’s 72 EVERY day, we do have that sometimes. :)
