So, I don’t have a full post today because I spent all yesterday with my Mamala and it was so much fun hanging out with her that I neglected the blog completely. However, I can’t let the day go by without saying a big THANK YOU for all the happy birthday comments I’ve received over the past few days!!

The fact that you take the time to read my blog- much less take the additional time to comment and send birthday wishes- well, it means so much me. Thank you. You guys are amazing.

thanks frog

I’ll be back tomorrow with my usual brand of sarcasm and tales of fitness related shenanigans and tomfoolery.

For today though I do have one big question- have you found that the blogging community has been more supportive than you were expecting when you first started your blog?

(For me this answer is a big YES in so many ways and for so many reasons :))

Happy Thursday all!! Thursday means one thing in this corner of the interwebs: it’s time for the Great 8 list.

So, this Sunday is my birthday. I’m turning thir- ahem, sorry there must be something in my throat. I’m turning thir- ahem! one more time, here we go, I’m turning thir- nope. Sorry. It’s the 1st anniversary of my 29th birthday. Rhymes with flirty, nerdy and wordy.

Ohh I’m being dramatic. It’s cool. I’m actually really psyched about entering this new decade, as long as I’m not expected to give up my propensity for immature jokes and bathroom humor, I’m ready to kick off the thirties with aplomb.

I was trying to figure out how to make a Great 8 list out of turning 30, and you guys, Buzzfeed has pretty much beat me to almost every one of them.

Top movies turning 30 this year? Done.
Top reasons turning 30 is awesome? Done.
Top list of random things also turning 30 this year? Done. (Although that one is
Top reasons Taylor Swift’s epic twenties anthem, “22” is funnier when redone for the thirties? (Done on youtube in song form)

BUT top reasons I’m ready to be 30 based on my responses to the lyrics in “22”?? NOT DONE!

Until now…

(If you’re not familiar with Taylor Swift’s song “22” you can go here, but essentially it talks about the things you do and think about when you’re 22 years of age.)

Top 8 Reasons I’m Ready to Turn 30, Taylor Swift

8. Lyric about being 22: “It feels like a perfect night for breakfast at midnight”

  • My response: I beg to differ. No matter what night of the week it is I tend to be asleep by 10.

7. Lyric about being 22: “To fall in love with strangers uh uh uh uh”

  • Huh, perhaps you have never heard of a little thing called stranger danger?

6. Lyric about being 22: “It’s miserable and magical oh yeah”

  • I mean, sure, although wouldn’t it just be easier not to make everything so dramatic and extreme, can’t we just describe it as “okay”? But brava for the alliteration.

5. Lyric about being 22: “Tonight’s the night when we forget about the deadlines”

  • I know, don’t you love buckling down and getting all your work done early? Oh that’s not what you meant? Oh, well, in that case forgetting about deadlines is really irresponsible and we are going to be kicking ourselves later for that decision.

4. Lyric about being 22: “And end up dreaming, instead of sleeping”

  • You would never suggest that if you knew how much I loved sleeping.

3. Lyric about being 22: “You don’t know about me, but I bet you want to”

  • You’re wondering why I’m wearing yoga pants and sneakers at a bar. And the reason is- because they are comfortable.

2. Lyric about being 22: “This place is too crowded, too many cool kids”

  • Wait, where are we again? We must be in the wrong place. Are you sure we got the address right?

1. Lyric about being 22: “It feels like one of those nights we won’t be sleeping”

  • Oh no, why not? Did we drink caffeine too late in the afternoon? Take a Melatonin, if we fall asleep right now we can still get a couple hours in before the alarm goes off at 5:30.

To everybody currently in the vicinity of 22 years- enjoy it :)  I totally would have understood the meaning of those lyrics if that song had come out when I was that age, and so should you.

To everybody else who’s closer to 32 than 22 (or if you’re one of those old soul’ed young’uns)- amirite?

When is your birthday? What’s your sign? How old are you turning? Do you like your birthday or does it give you a little anxiety?

So, as you guys already know yesterday was my sister’s birthday, but what you don’t yet know is that today is my mom’s birthday!! Hooray!

(Actually, if you read the title you already knew that too. Which you did, because my readers are the smartest on the internets)

My Mom!

My Mom!

And yes, that means another ode is below! (I wasn’t kidding yesterday about how it’s a tradition to mark milestones with a few rhyming verses. Up until now though those odes have been emailed or recited aloud rather than posted on a blog, but change is good.)

So anyways, as I was saying, today is my mom’s birthday.  As you’ve probably already noticed (due to you being among the smartest on the interwebs, which we just established) today is very close to Mother’s Day.

Therefore, in my family, Mothers Day is not just a mere 24 hours of tribute, it is an event. It is a holiday that rivals Christmas. It starts on May 9 and lasts until Mothers Day. Some years that’s a weekend, while other years it’s nearly a week. It even has it’s own name: Mothers/Birth Day (I guess we could have gotten a little more creative, but there you have it)

So today I would like not only to pay tribute to my mom, but to YOU if you are a mom and to your mom as well.

And here we go with round 2 of odes! This one is for you, Mom:

Birthday/Mothers’ Day Ode

To my freakishly young looking mother,

Never would I want the genes of any other.

But I’m still not sure how the entire month of May,

Has somehow managed to become “your day.”

Even though we sometimes fight,

I always know deep down, you’re right.

You’re so good at car dancing while driving down highways,

And so thin I can’t see you when you turn sideways.

Thank you for always keeping me in line,

And thanks for always being a really fun time.

Thank you for loving me no matter what,

And thanks for telling me when you can see my butt.

Thanks for letting me know when my skirts are too short,

And thanks for telling me which friends are the shady sort.

Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face,

And thanks for handling everything with wit and grace.

It’s true you cheat when we play Gin Rummy,

But you pick me up when I feel crumby.

We always have the best time together,

Thank you for being the best mother ever :)

Happy Birthday Mom!! Love you!

me and my mom!

me and my mom!

What do you guys have planned for Mothers Day?

Do you still make gifts for your mom or do you buy them?

If you are a mom, what is your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day? What’s your favorite gift you’ve received?

So, today is my sister’s 24th birthday!! Yay!

This is Gioia riding on an ostrich. Both her and ostrich have the same expressions on their faces

Happy birthday Gioia!!! (pronounced like joy-ah, for those of you who aren’t fluent in vowels)

And not to sound like Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec when she compliments Ann Perkins, but my sister is becoming a magnificent, beautiful, amazing woman and I’m so proud of her.

My sister is the athlete’s athlete. She was a tennis phenom when she was younger. When she was 12, she was about 4 feet 8 inches tall and she was playing against- and beating, mind you- players from the boys varsity tennis team at my high school. Literally.

The two of us had a grand ol’ time together when I first got my license and I would drive her to lessons and then we’d go to TCBY after. We would turn up the radio really loud and sing even louder to chart-toppers of the day like Shania Twain’s ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’. Oh, and also Jimmy Buffet. I remember one day the two of us played ‘The Weather is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful’ on repeat until we learned every. single. word.

Cut to the present, and we live on two opposite sides of the country :( We talk on gchat and email weekly about the important things but getting each other on the phone is hard. When we do finally find a time to talk on the phone that fits into both our schedules AND works with the time difference, they’re marathon sessions. 3 hours easy.

So, this post is dedicated to the best sister anyone could possibly ask for. And in our family it’s sort of a tradition to mark milestones by making up an ode, so Sister, this one is for you…

Birthday Ode

To my dear, darling, younger sister,

I was very glad you weren’t born a mister.

Because I already had a brother,

and I really didn’t want another.

But between the ages of 0 to 5

you were the craziest toddler alive

luckily you outgrew that phase

and now you’re just freaking AMAZE-(ing)

You have the strongest abs,

Of anyone I know,

And you’re my favorite person,

With whom to eat cookie dough.

You live across the country,

So its sometimes hard to chat,

Oh remember that one birthday,

You got that really cranky cat?

So to re-cap my darling sister,

I’m very glad you’re not a mister,

I’m insanely jealous of your core,

And I hope you LOVE being twenty-four!

Happy Birthday Sister!! You are a beautiful tropical fish. Love ya :)

Do  you have siblings?? Are you close with them?

What’s the weirdest animal you’ve ever ridden on? (mine is probably a pony… I’m not as adventurous with things I use for transportation as my sister)
